Year5-20192020
Year 5 – Thursday 19th March
Hello Year 5s. We hope you are well and that you are all working hard, whilst giving yourself some rest and fun too. We hope that you were able to complete the jobs set yesterday and that there were not any problems accessing them.
How was the short PE activity? Did you enjoy it? Did anyone manage to get their parents, siblings or anyone else to join you? If you did, well done! Let us know how it went.
Miss Thomas is still available to email at year5@stmarksce.org.uk if you have any questions, need some help, want to send a picture of your hard work or just want to say hello. Thank you to those children who already have emailed in, it has been fantastic to hear from you and see how everything is getting on. Just remember to check with an adult that it’s okay to email first.
Here are your learning jobs for Thursday. Again we have some of the same subjects as the last few days -Maths, Book Club, and English – but today we also have a topic lesson and another Grammar Hammer. It doesn’t matter too much which order you do the jobs in, but we recommend that you do Book Club before English today. This will make your English job easier.
Maths – Today you will be continuing to subtract fractions with different denominators, which also includes mixed numbers. The key skills you need for this you practised yesterday, and then you just need to subtract the whole numbers first. It includes a couple of challenge questions, which you do not have to include, but do have a go at if you can. Please let Miss T know if you manage them or even have a go, it would be fantastic to hear. To make things easier, we have created a video and uploaded it to YouTube which talks through the different sections of this job. There will be a link to this in a separate post, which is password protected, so look out for that post and the password.
Book Club – Today you have Chapter 17 to read. Then you have to describe how Anthony is feeling at the moment (throughout this chapter). You need to use APE to complete this, so it should about a paragraph in length. I have put a reminder of APE on the PowerPoint for anyone who is unsure.
English – remember it will be easier to complete English after Book Club today. In English, you will be writing a character description of the character Glass Eye.
Grammar Hammer – Complete the Grammar Hammer questions, thinking carefully about each answer.
Topic – Look through the PowerPoint, learning about the capital city of Vienna and it’s history. It focuses on the location of the city and why it was located there. Use the information provided to then write a short speech explaining why the location is perfect for it’s purpose. (More information on the PowerPoint)
Just a quick reminder, please try your best at the different jobs and think carefully about what we have done in class and how this can help you with your jobs. Remember to talk to your parents and see if they can help you, and if you’re still unsure, send an email to Miss T to ask for help. (Email address year5@stmarksce.org.uk )
We are proud of you for your hard work so far and remember to keep in touch. As always, stay safe, wash your hands and continue to show all the learning behaviours towards your work as you usually do.
Mrs Poole, Miss Thomas, Mrs Stone and Miss Fowler.
Year 5 – Wednesday 18th March
Hello Year 5s. We hope you are well and that you kept yourselves busy on Tuesday, as well as having some relaxation time as well.
We hope that you were able to complete the jobs set yesterday and that there were not any problems accessing the tasks. If you can, try and make some time to get some fresh air today, it’ll give your brain a good rest and a refresh.
Miss Thomas will be available to contact if you email year5@stmarksce.org.uk if you have: any questions, need a password to TT Rockstars, need some help, want to send a picture of your hard work or just want to say hello. Just remember to check with an adult that it’s okay to send the email first. She looks forward to hearing from you.
This update has your learning jobs for Wednesday. They are mostly the same subjects as yesterday – Maths, Book Club and English – but instead of Science, there will be a Grammar Hammer sheet to complete, a short French job and a link to a short video on YouTube as a PE exercise (instructions below).
Maths – Today you will be subtracting fractions with different denominators. It is very similar to adding with different denominators, you need to change them to the same denominator first. Instructions and step-by-step guides are on the sheet to help you.
Book Club – Today you have Chapter 16 to read, then you have to make a short prediction about what you think will happen to the characters in the next chapter.
English – You will be recapping the main events of the story so far, reviewing the rules for speech and then writing your own version of a section of the story in third person, including a conversation between the characters about a certain event.
Grammar Hammer – Complete the Grammar Hammer questions, thinking carefully about each answer.
French – Use the information on the sheet to write out the numbers in French as a recap of your previous learning.
PE – Follow the link to a YouTube video, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mhHY8mOQ5eo . It is a 15-minute workout video with Joe Wickes, which was designed to give your body some exercise when you are inside all day. (TOP TIP – Maybe complete this in the middle of Maths and English to give your brain a break)
Just a quick reminder, please try your best at the different jobs and think carefully about what we have done in class and how this can help you with your jobs. Remember to talk to your parents and see if they can help you, and if they are still unsure, send an email to Miss T to ask for help. (Email address year5@stmarksce.org.uk )
Remember to stay safe, wash your hands and continue to show all the learning behaviours towards your work as you usually do.

Year 5 – Tuesday 17th March
Tuesday 17th March 2020
Good morning Year 5! The Year 5 team hope you and all your families are all keeping safe and well.
.Have you had your breakfast? How are you helping your parents?
As promised, we have been working hard creating some home learning for you so you can keep up with your studies. We will upload work daily in the morning for you to complete at home. We are sorry that it is coming to you a bit later today, but as you can imagine we needed some time to sort everything out for today. In future, we will try to get it uploaded earlier for you.
A few things to remember …
- We’re here to help! You can contact one of the Year 5 teacher to ask questions, or say hello, by using the email year5@stmarksce.org,uk . Make sure you get parental permission first before sending us any emails. We will check this account often and look forward to hearing from you.
- We’ve planned the home learning tasks to link as closely to the learning you have been doing in school as we can. Sometimes it will be very similar to what we do in school, other times it will be a little different.
- We have tried hard to think of activities that you can do with resources and equipment that you’d normally have at home. If there is something you need, please do not go out and buy anything, instead think of what else you use or use the email address above and one of the teachers may be able to offer some solutions!
- Your books are at school, so find any other paper you have at home or notebooks to complete the jobs. Just remember to keep your presentation neat, as if you were at school.
- Use the powerpoints and sheets uploaded here as a starting point. You don’t have to print them off to complete them. If you want to, then please do, but don’t feel like you have to.
- You can decide how you want to complete your work each day – you may want to get it all done in the morning, or you may want to take your time – do a bit, have a rest or get some fresh air (if you’re not self-isolating), then do a bit more later. The choice is yours – it’s up to you, but we really would like you to get it done. (TOP TIP – don’t leave it all until the evening!).
- Remember that TT Rockstars is always available to you and reading is a productive use of your time.
Today’s jobs will be: Early Morning type jobs, Maths, Book Club, English and Science. Please try your best at the different jobs and think carefully about what we have done in class and how this can help you with your jobs. If you need to, remember to talk to your parents, carers or other adults and see if they can help you . If they are unsure, send an email and we will be happy to help if we can.
Remember to stay safe and continue to show all the learning behaviours towards your work as you usually would.
Have a safe and productive day

Year 5 Spring Term so far
What a brilliant start to 2020!
Excellent English
In English, the children have been working their socks off and creating some exceptional pieces of work. They begun the term learning about the Ancient Greek city states of Athens and Sparta and contrasting different aspects of these. The children then wrote persuasive arguments in order to convince others of whether Athens or Sparta (which ever they chose) was the superior state.
The children then began reading ‘The Adventures of Odysseus’ in Book Club, before moving onto studying the book in English. Designs of new Greek mythical creatures have been created in preparation for writing new adventures for Odysseus. The children then wrote non-chronological reports and kenning poems about these creative creatures.
Amazing Art
Art has been really exciting this half term so far as the children have been exploring how the Ancient Greek used decorative columns as a part of their building designs – these designs are also still used today! Over the next few weeks, we will be making these out of clay! Then in DT, the children have been designing Ancient Greek chariots, which used to be raced in the Olympic games, ready to start making next week.
Marvellous Maths
What a lot of new methods the children have been securing over the last few weeks. For multiplication, the children have practised the short method for when they are multiplying by a one digit number and then also learned the long method for when they are multiplying by a two digit number. This long method was super tricky to learn and took quite a bit of resilience to master. In division, the children have been learning the short method (also known as bus stop), showing remainders when appropriate too. |
Wonderful Worships
‘No Way Through Isn’t True’ has been main focus for our worships this half term and we have also been thinking about the Christian value of Hope – in relation to this. This week, the children created beautiful hope jars during their class worships where they reflected upon phrases of hope which could support them and others during darker times.
