Year 4’s Creative Term

What a wonderful half term we have had learning about rivers and India as part of our project 'River of Life'. The children have worked hard and used their creativity within their Topic work, Art and DT. 

Our final website post for the Autumn term is written by our Year 4 pupils – Florence and Monica – who are going to explain their work:

Geography – Journal Pages
This term, we learned about India and the river in India called the river Ganges.The river Ganges is very important to people in India. People in India wash in the river because they believe that when they wash it washes away their sins but there also are negative impacts of the river on life. We made these journal pages after learning about different places along the Ganges. We used  creativity to present and decorate our page.

DT – Making bread
In DT, we made bread and compared it to an Indian chapati and decided which one we preferred. We liked the bread because it had more texture and wasn't that salty but the chapati. The 4 ingredients we used were water, yeast, flour and salt.

Art – Mehndi and Rangoli Patterns 
In art, we all looked at mehndi patterns and we had to create our own patterns. We looked at lots of designs and saw all of the beautiful patterns.

Also in art we looked at some Indian fabrics in the hall and noticed some patterns. We designed some Rangoli patterns and after we did our practise, a few days later, we did our neat one and some of them went on display. Fun fact: some people in India put rangoli patterns on their floor to welcome people into their homes.

Sensational Science in Year 4!

This term, Year 4 have enjoyed doing investigations during our Science Days. In Autumn 1, we became human biologists and learnt about the digestion system. The children created a model of a stomach using tights as the intestines, a sandwich bag for the stomach and funnel for the oesophagus. They had great fun seeing how the stomach breaks down the food so we can get energy. I’m sure you can imagine their reactions when the intestines created waste!

After learning about the digestive system, we moved onto learning about the function of our teeth and how liquids have different effects on them. The children made predictions and tested marble chips (to represent the teeth) by placing them into a variety of liquids to see what happened.

This term, we have learnt all about the states of matter and investigated how liquids behave differently – this is called viscosity.

We also had lots of fun learning about how solids change to liquids by melting. The children worked sensibly with the candles, after a safety briefing of course, to test 5 different solids and discover their melting points.

In our final lesson, we applied all this knowledge to see how the water cycle works. We even create our own water cycle experiment using a candle to represent the sun, water and a mirror to collect the condensation.

We are so impressed by the knowledge the children have learnt during our science days and they have enjoyed all the investigations we have done.

Year 4’s Journey to India!

Project Hook 

What an exciting start the children have had to this term and we know many of them have been discussing their plane journey with you at home!

 
Our first day back started with the children being told that they had a special mission to be a ‘River Explorer’ and that they would soon be jetting off somewhere in the world. In order to prepare for their flight, the children made their own passports and were given their own plane ticket for St Mark’s Air.

Once the children were prepared, they made their way down to the ‘boarding gate’ where they had their passport identification checked by our lovely St Mark’s Air crew.

Once on board the plane, the children sat through their safety briefing before taking off. Half way through the flight the children enjoyed some in-flight entertainment. They worked together to solve some questions about rivers around the world and were rewarded with some biscuits!

After a while, the plane landed, however their destination was still a mystery. Children made their way back to their classes where there were lots of photo clues about the country which they had travelled to. Once they guessed India correctly, their passports were stamped accordingly. The children used their geographical knowledge to work out that they would be studying the river Ganges this term.

Art Enrichment
To embrace the India theme, the children had an enrichment morning where Miss Stonehouse kindly brought in her Indian fabrics. She shared these with the children and even dressed up Chloe in a sari!

The fabrics were then laid out in the hall. The children explored the patterns and used ‘view finders’ to draw parts of the fabrics in their sketch books. The ideas which they collected will then be used to influence rangoli and mehndi designs which the children will be working on over the next few weeks.

DT – Making Bread
Over the coming weeks, the children will be developing their Design Technology skills by making bread rolls. They will also have the opportunity to try Indian chapati bread and compare how these breads are made. We have our school records for any gluten-free children, but please do communicate with us if there are any children with updated allergies or intolerances.

Year 4 News

We’ve had a wonderful couple of weeks in Year 4, and the children are starting to settle back into school life well. In our topic sessions, the children have been busy learning about the Ancient Egyptians and they will soon be using their knowledge to write their own version of a Mr Benn story where he ventures to the city of Giza. We are looking forward to updating you with some photographs from the term in the next couple of weeks.

Parent Information Session: Change of Date
Please be informed that our Parent Information Session will be moving to Monday 4th October at 4:30pm. 
 
We are currently making enquiries into the very exciting opportunity of a 2-night residential trip for our Year 4 pupils which is to take place in July 2022.  We are hoping to secure a date and venue over the next week, and will be sharing all details and information during our Parent Information Session. A letter will also be sent out following the Information Session.

Summer 2021 – Unearthing Angle-Land

June & July 2021

The children have been getting stuck into their final project in Year 4: Unearthing Angle-Land. This history-led topic will lead them on a journey to discover what life was like in the Anglo-Saxon times as well as being able to compare this era to that of Roman Britain.
