In English today, you will be writing your exciting Pirate Adventure stories. We are really looking forward to these and hope you are too. The presentation below shows one way that you could go about your writing and has broken the writing into sections. You can do this too if you’d prefer and you can write your story over two or three days if that makes it more manageable, breaking it into a beginning, middle and an end. For reluctant writers, this can make the task less daunting and more manageable. If you do this, remember to read where you have got to before you carry on with your writing so that you don’t miss anything exciting. Tomorrow’s lesson, is a grammar hammer but you can miss this if you’d prefer to continue with your story so be as flexible as you like.  

Some children may wish to include pictures in their stories too and they may even want to have chapters or turn it into a little book. This is fine and if children want to type their stories, then we are happy for them to do so. Another incentive that we find useful in school is allowing them to write in pen. 

Try to use as many of the different skills that we have learnt over the past few weeks in your writing as you can: expanded noun phrases, similes, compound sentences and question and exclamation sentences. These help to make your writing exciting and engaging for the reader. Above all have fun and enjoy being an author! We can’t wait to see the end results and all of your super ideas!

Today’s extra activity is to continue with our science topic on plants, specifically thinking about the life cycle of a bean. Firstly click here to read a story about the different stages in the life cycle of a bean, and have a chat about how many stages there are, and what the bean looks like at each stage.

 

Once you have finished the story, have a go at sequencing the bean pictures below in the correct order. Can you label the root, shoot and leaf on the longest bean? If you do not have access to a printer to print the bean pictures, you could have a go at drawing and colouring the beans at the different stages of the cycle. Have fun!

In English today, we will be beginning our planning for our pirate adventure story. We have a story starter and a planning sheet for you to complete. We will use this to guide our writing today. If you don’t have access to a printer, you can write your plan directly onto a sheet of paper.  The pdf flipchart below breaks our planning down into steps so you can work through this today as you complete your plan.

Remember this is your story, so feel free to add in any extra details that you like. You may also change your ideas after you plan it and that is fine too. Planning is basically an opportunity to try and test out ideas. The important thing is to make sure you have an exciting part and then a good ending. We are really looking forward to reading them after you have written them tomorrow.  Talking about your story once you have planned it is another way to plan a successful story. Try telling it to members of your family using story telling language: first, next, suddenly, out of the blue…

In English today, we will be continuing our work on compound sentences whilst also learning about the characters that appear in adventure stories. Most adventure stories have villains and heroes and we can tell whether characters are nice (heroes) or nasty (villains) based on how they act or behave and by what they say. For today’s activity, we will use some speech bubbles to help us think about what the heroic and villainous characters might say to each other.  Whilst we do this, we can try and show the character’s personality and practise some of our compound sentences. We have included a speech bubble example sheet in the resources section below, to give you some ideas. 

Optional extra

As an extension task, your child may wish to explore how we write dialogue into our stories. The last two pages of the pdf flipchart below give some examples. Your child may like to go back and look at each of their speech bubbles and then write these as direct speech, using speech marks. This is a year 3 expectation but many children in year 2 like to write speech into their stories, so we often include a discussion of this in our classwork to begin to teach the children how to do this. Feel free to give it a go and challenge yourselves but there is no expectation that children must be able to do this in Year 2. 

Maths

Today in maths we will be continuing with our measurement unit, looking specifically at ordering lengths.

To do this, as suggested with the previous activities, you could approach this practically to start with by measuring a selection of toys or items that you have in the house. You can then consider which is the longest, and which is the shortest, before ordering them with the shortest at one end, and the longest at the other. If you used items to help with yesterdays maths, perhaps you could use the same items to allow for consistency, re-enforcing prior learning.

There are then some cutting and sticking activities that you may like to try, or you could complete the BBC quiz, or you could also see if you can collect dandelions when you go on your daily walk and see if you can spot different points in their life cycle.

In English this week, we will be planning and writing our own exciting adventure story. We’ve heard that lots of you have been watching pirate movies and reading pirate books for inspiration so you will be able to use your own ideas in your story. Over the next two days, we will be revising using compound sentences as we learn about pirate adventure stories and the exciting heroic and villainous characters. On Wednesday, we will plan our own story and on Thursday we will write our own adventure.

Today’s activity includes a clip for children to watch and it would be advisable for adults to supervise children with this- it only lasts about 1 minute. When they have finished watching, the children can either practise writing compound sentences about the clip ( i.e. A big orange octopus crashed onto the ship and it chased Captain Hook).; or they can write their own short adventure about it including some compound sentences, like the one in the example that’s given. Have fun, be creative and challenge yourselves!

Today in maths, we will be continuing our unit on measure, exploring comparing lengths. Perhaps you can engage your child with this concept by firstly comparing the length of some of their favourite toys, using the language ‘shorter’ and ‘longer’ to compare each object. You can then talk about items that you would measure using centimetres, and items that you would measure using metres, reminding your child that a metre is much longer than a cm, as there are 100 cm’s in 1 metre. Use a ruler and metre stick if you have one available to help compare different lengths and decide which length is longer, and which is shorter.

Today’s extra activity is to find out about the different parts that make up a plant. Now that the weather is warmer and spring is here, the plants are starting to grow. These are growing from seeds, ‘hidden treasures’ in the soil. Read the poem about plants and then complete the worksheet describing the job of each part of a flowering plant. Perhaps you can go outside and look at plants, and even draw your own. May be you can impress your family by teaching them about the different parts of a plant.
