Year 1 – Thursday 30th April
Good Morning Year 1
Dear parents and children,
We hope you are safe and well. We have loved reading all of your lovely emails about the seeds you planted. Have you checked on them today? Do they need watering? If you’ve not planted any seeds, please don’t worry. Take a look at how Miss Jamieson’s plants have grown:
If you’re looking for something extra to do today, here is a video of an astronaut called Christina Koch reading a story to you! Find it here: Astronaut Story.
If you fancy trying to break a Guinness World Record then join in with England’s Biggest Assembly,
Today Thursday 30th April at 10am, the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, will deliver a message of hope to school pupils across the country in the first assembly at Oak National Academy. Today we are thinking about using different sentence starters. We’ll be looking at some words called ‘adverbs’. These words describe the doing word (verb) in your sentence. Take a look at these slides to learn about using adverbs as sentence starters: Adverbs Slides
To continue your learning, you may like to have a go at this activity: Adverb Sentence Starters Activity
When you have finished writing your sentences, use the writing reminder pencil to check you have everything you need.
Maths
Today we are continuing to look at doubling. Can you remind someone at home what doubling is? How do you double a group of objects? If you need a reminder, you could rewatch the White Rose video on doubling from yesterday’s maths activity. Find it here: Week 1, Lesson 1 Video
Have a go at this butterfly doubling activity. You will need: Paint, Fingers, Butterfly template (printed or drawn out). Find our template here: Doubling Butterfly Template
Instructions:
- Fingerpaint some dots on one side of the butterfly (quickly – don’t let them dry!)
- Count how many dots you have drawn.
- Fold the paper along the butterfly’s body. We have drawn a line to help.
- The same amount of dots should have printed on the other side of the paper. Count how many dots there are on the butterfly now.
- Fill in the sentences: Double _____ is _____. _____ + _____ = _____
- You could repeat this with a new piece of paper and a different number of dots.
If you would like to continue learning about doubling, you could complete this activity sheet. Challenges are included for those who wish to complete them. Find it here: Maths Doubling – 30th April
Topic
Computing: Last term, we learnt how to stay safe when using the internet. With everyone using the internet a lot more at the moment, we thought it might be a good time to recap some important rules.
Talk to someone at home about what you use the internet for. Can you remember any tips from last term for staying safe online? Today we are thinking about sharing information online. Use the slides to talk through what information you should share online with someone at home. Personal Information Slides

Maths
Today in maths we are thinking about division. In Year 1, this is mainly looking grouping and sharing and we avoid looking at the division symbol as this is a more abstract concept. We focus on teaching division through concrete objects and picture representations. We also look at halving and how this links to doubling. Use our division guide for examples of these. Find it here: Year 1 Division Guide
Summer Term, Week 1, Lesson 2 – Make equal groups (grouping)
Today we are starting something brand new in maths! We are going to be having a go at making equal groups. Have a watch of the video. What do you spot? While watching the video and doing your job can you join in with the sentence?
‘There are ___ objects altogether.’
‘There are ___ equal groups of ___.’
You could have a go at making equal groups practically with different objects in your house. You could put your teddies into equal groups. You could put your toy cars into equal groups. You could put your loom bands into equal groups.
Question 4 of your job asks you to group the counters in different ways. For this question you could draw the counters in different groups or you could use objects from around your house to help you.

Summer Term – Week 1, Lesson 1 – Make Doubles
Today we are going to have a go at making doubles! When we double we add the same again, making 2 lots of the initial group. Have a watch of the video. What do you spot? While watching the video and doing your job can you join in with the sentences?
‘Double ___ is ___.’
While working out doubles, you could draw objects on a piece of paper or you could use objects from your house. You could use toy cars, teddies, lego bricks, pasta, or anything else you can think of! Maybe you could put your objects into a Part-Whole model!
During the video the lady talks about ‘skip counting’. This is a little bit like when we were super clever and did our jumps to 10. You do ‘skip counting’ after you know your answer. It is a way of showing what you know. So before you skip count use your fingers or objects to find out what double is.

Science: How to plant a seed.
All plants start as a seed or bulb. They need certain things to grow so it is important think carefully when planting a seed. If you’ve not watched it already, watch this BBC Bitesize video about what plants need. Have a go at planting your own seeds. You can use some seeds from a packet or take some seeds out of fruit or vegetables you have in your house.
To help you plant your seeds, check out Miss Jamieson’s video on how to plant a seed here: How to Grow a Seed – Miss J
When you’ve watched her video, have a go at planting yourself. Make sure a grown-up is around to help you.
English
You might want to have completed the topic job before having a go at English today. Alternatively, you can check out Miss Jamieson’s video on how to plant a seed if you’ve not watched it already. Find it here: How to Grow a Seed – Miss J
Think about all the different steps you did to plant your seed or use Miss Jamieson’s video to see the steps she took.
What things did you need? See if you can write a list of things you used to plant the seed. ‘You will need:’
What happened first?
What order did each step happen?
Today we are going to write some instructions for how to plant a seed.
What are instructions? Can you tell someone at home what they are? Look at our instruction example below. What do you notice about the instructions? Use the word mat, template and slides provided to have a go at writing your own instructions.
