World Book Day

The children looked amazing today! Thank you for your support and efforts in making it happen. It’s been another lovely day to be at St Mark’s. You may have also heard about ‘chokies’, chocolate cake, Bob the Builder and Matilda. The children were treated to a St Mark’s Performance, which brought much laughter. Thanks to Mrs Chapman and Mrs Rosso for putting it all together.

Do you speak French?

On Thursday 30th March, we are having a “French Culture Day”. We are looking for adults who speak French to help us out by reading a story to our children in French. We can be flexible with times. Please let us know.

Water Bottles and Sweets!

A reminder that water bottles should be as plain and unbranded as possible. “Prime” waterbottles are not allowed, in the same way that we don’t allow Coke or other brands as water bottles.

Please avoid putting sweets in children’s lunchboxes too! Thanks.

Community Nature Hunt

Hatch Warren Nature Group would love to invite you to their Community Nature Hunt!

Where – Meet at St Marks Meadow (on the corner or Danebury and Woodbury roads right by Dandalions/St Marks pre-school)

“Come and join us for an explore, short walk, nature discovery and find out what is on your doorstep!

We will be hunting for everything on our nature treasure hunt list attached. You are very welcome to use this nature hunt sheet on another day and have a lovely family walk while you search.

  • Massive thank you for our support of our Careers Fair – and for those who were able to run stalls. The children were amazing – so polite, interested and curious about the different jobs on show. The future is bright! See lots of photos below.

  • Year 6, we have been so impressed by you this week during Bikeability. From learning to ride for the first time, to becoming more confident on the road, you were all so well behaved and respectful – and had lots of fun!

A heart-felt message of safety

Please find a heart-felt note below from one of our crossing patrol team, particularly relating to the double crossing on Woodbury Road.

My job is to keep children safe while crossing the road, so please could a friendly reminder be sent to parents as to what I sometimes notice?

I can only legally stop traffic on one side of the Woodbury Road crossing. Parents must supervise their children across the other side and give them clear instructions. Common things parents are saying (on my side) are ‘Quick, quick, run!’ for example (because they are late/rushing); they then have to shout ‘STOP!!’ before they run into the road the other side.

Also, with spring on the way (and Bikeability this week) more children are coming on bikes and scooters. Some children (particularly preschool siblings and KS1 children) are scootering straight through and out the other side despite being asked to push their scooters. I worry there will be a collision on the other side as not all cars stop. Regarding Bikeability, when these sessions are finished and all children bring their bikes home please could they be reminded at home time to walk across crossing with them.

This week in the afternoon, on two occasions, I have had groups of preschool aged children arriving at the crossing without parents. At one point 5 were playing at the bottom of the bank while parents queued (some out of sight) and at the same time I had 3 children with me on the other side. I do my best but can’t man both sides of the crossing at once and children can play/behave unpredictably.

To end on a positive note, a friend showed great kindness when a child had fallen off his bike because of carrying a great deal. He helped the boy up and asked if he was ok, picked up his stuff, then carried the guitar to the boy’s mum when she arrived. 

Thank you for your support, I hope I don’t come across as nagging! I just want to keep everyone safe and prevent any incidents.

    Dance Competitions

    Riaz from 3T competed in her first ballroom and Latin competitions. For Latin she danced the Rumba and had one recall. For her ballroom she danced the waltz and had to dance a total of 4 rounds where she made the final. Resulting in her qualifying to compete in Blackpool in November!  Well done Riaz!

Sad News

Some of you may remember Frank our dedicated and caring lollipop man. Sadly he passed away last weekend. Frank was a popular member of our school community. He was definitely an Agent of Change – making our world a better, safer, happier place. We are grateful for his service and his fun, and our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.

Holidays/Unauthorised Absences – Important update

Please note we are unable to authorise any holidays during term time, due to Government guidelines on attendance. We are only able to grant permission in very exceptional circumstances.
 
Any absence of 5 days or more will be subject to a Penalty Notice. This is enforced by Hampshire County Council; however, all administrative work is carried out by the school office team. We must stress any fine paid goes directly to Hampshire County Council  and does not benefit the school in anyway.
 
The Penalty Notice is currently £60.00 per parent, per child. Therefore, an unauthorised absence with two children in the school with 2 parents will incur a fine of £240.00. Once a Penalty Notice is issued, you have 21 days to make payment. It is important you pay promptly; failure to do so will result in court proceedings. Hampshire County Council will not accept any late payments. We regret once a Penalty Notice has been issued, we are unable to withdraw it, under any circumstances. Like a parking ticket, once it is set in motion, ithas to be paid, or go to court and make representation.
 
It is important to remember this: if you have already received a Penalty Notice for an unauthorised absence, any further absences for holiday purposes will be subject to legal proceedings, even if the previous Penalty Notice was paid on time. IE it’s not possible to have regular, successive fines each time a holiday is taken. Subsequent fines are likely to go straight to legal procedings, not just a fine. This is Hampshire County Council rules, not the school.

Gladiator – Now we are Free: Hans Zimmer

Hans Zimmer is a German composer. He composes most of his music for films. This piece of music is from a film called Gladiator. You will also hear his music played in films such as The Lion King and Madagascar.

 

 

Pavane: Gabriel Faure

Gabriel Fauré was a French composer in the Romantic period. One of his music teacher’s was Saint- Saën who we heard from last term.

This week’s top news & reminders

  • A massive THANK YOU to our FOSM team and all who helped make the disco possible yesterday. You are amazing! We hope the children enjoyed it!
  • Well done to our Year 4 children who took part in a football tournament against 3 other local schools.
  • This Tuesday – wear something orange and/or blue (non-uniform) to celebrate Safer Internet Day. No money needed!
  • This Friday – School Council Activity Fun day! Details below.
  • PE Kit reminder –  this must be within our uniform policy. Too mnay children are wearing logo’d/fashion items, and that is not PE kit. 
  • A reminder too that watches must not contain cameras, and must not connect to the internet whilst at school. Thanks!

PE KIT Uniform

  • Navy or black shorts. Jogging bottoms for outside in cold weather (leggings are fine too).
  • PE skirts with cycling-style shorts are acceptable.
  • White t-shirt. Please also wear the school jumper to school on PE days. Football shirts are not acceptable as PE kit.
  • Trainers for all children.
  • Children should wear PE kit to school on the days that they have PE.

No-Tech Day challenge

We will be challenging children and their families to take part in a day without tech on the weekend of the 11th and 12th February!  Will you accept the challenge? Details arrive in a email this week.

Reminder – this Friday!

On the 10th February 2023, the school council will be hosting an activity day to raise money for 2 aspects of our school: (1) Our chosen charity, The Mud House Children’s Foundation (2) Costumes for the 57 children representing our school at Dance Live, a national dance competition.

The activity day will consist of several different sporting activities. These are: javelin, running, hula hooping, curling, tri-golf, skipping, tennis keepy-uppies, long jump and hurdles. Each activity costs 50p to do. To do all of them it costs £3 so you get a whopping £1.50 discount! If your child gets top three on the leaderboard,for any activity, they will get a prize (more information to come). Each year group will have its own leaderboard and there will be a time slot for your year group throughout the day. PE kits can be worn all day. You will also get a participation certificate for taking part.

Squash Success!

Well done to Logan and Cooper for their participation and success in a recent squash tournament. Logan won the tournament for his age range and Cooper came second out of his group. WOW!

Johann Strauss II was an Austrian composer mainly composing light music for waltzes or operettas. The Blue Danube is one of his most famous pieces of music inspired by the Danube river that flows through many countries in Europe.

Letter from our School Council:

On the 10th February 2023, the school council will be hosting an activity day to raise money for 2 aspects of our school: (1) Our chosen charity, The Mud House Children’s Foundation (2) Costumes for the 57 children representing our school at Dance Live, a national dance competition.

  • Pastoral Drop-In Session

    The St Mark’s pastoral team will be hosting a parent and carer drop-in session every half term, each with a different focus.

    Our first session this term will be looking at supporting children with worries and anxieties.

    Mrs Atherton, Mrs Delves and Mrs Elms will be on hand to chat through any concerns, with a cup of tea and a biscuit 🙂.

    Please join us on Monday 30th January from 8.30am to 9.30am in the church (younger children welcome too!).

  • Safer Internet Day and Challenge
    • This year we will be taking part in Safer Internet Day on Tuesday 7th February. Please send your children to school on this day wearing something either orange or blue (or both!) to match the Safer Internet Day logo.
    • No-Tech Day challenge. We will be challenging children and their families to take part in a day without tech on the weekend of the 11th and 12th February!  Will you accept the challenge?

Music of the Week!

Johann Strauss II was an Austrian composer mainly composing light music for waltzes or operettas. The Blue Danube is one of his most famous pieces of music inspired by the Danube river that flows through many countries in Europe.
