  • Well done to our Year 5&6 children who took part in the Atheletics Tournament at Brighton Hill yesterday. We came in 3rd place out of Basingstoke schools!
  • A few events coming up to be aware of: School Council Activity Day (10th Feb), Safer Internet Day (7th Feb), Careers Fair (23/24th Feb). Details below.

Letter from our School Council:

On the 10th February 2023, the school council will be hosting an activity day to raise money for 2 aspects of our school: (1) Our chosen charity, The Mud House Children’s Foundation (2) Costumes for the 57 children representing our school at Dance Live, a national dance competition.

The activity day will consist of several different sporting activities. These are: javelin, running, hula hooping, curling, tri-golf, skipping, tennis keepy-uppies, long jump and hurdles. Each activity costs 50p to do. To do all of them it costs £3 so you get a whopping £1.50 discount! If your child gets top three on the leaderboard,for any activity, they will get a prize (more information to come). Each year group will have its own leaderboard and there will be a time slot for your year group throughout the day. PE kits can be worn all day. You will also get a participation certificate for taking part.

Agents of Change – “Making the world a better place” – Update

  • Thank you for your nominations of children who go above and beyond to make our world a better place. The Agents Of Change badges will be presented on Mondays.

  • Pastoral Drop-In Session

    The St Mark’s pastoral team will be hosting a parent and carer drop-in session every half term, each with a different focus.blank

    Our first session this term will be looking at supporting children with worries and anxieties.

    Mrs Atherton, Mrs Delves and Mrs Elms will be on hand to chat through any concerns, with a cup of tea and a biscuit 🙂.

    Please join us on Monday 30th January from 8.30am to 9.30am in the church (younger children welcome too!).

Johann Strauss II was an Austrian composer mainly composing light music for waltzes or operettas. The Blue Danube is one of his most famous pieces of music inspired by the Danube river that flows through many countries in Europe.

Agents of Change – “Making the world a better place” – Update

  • The residents of Pemberely House loved their Christmas cards (Facebook link)!
  • Thank you for your nominations of children who go above and beyond to make our world a better place. The Agents Of Change badges will be presented on Mondays.
  • A friend reminded me of the following today… “In our lives, after the excitement and celebrations of Christmas, there is always a lull. We fall back into the routine of work and there is a sense that we are just trying to get through the weeks to the brighter season ahead.  So being “Agents of Change” helps lift and motivate us, to encourage us to think beyond ourselves. Each act of kindness will be greeted with a smile and will prompt others to do the same.”

Outdoors Revamp Update

  • Our Year R area will be finished by half-term, after which we press on with the Forest and Farm areas.
  • We’re also doing some prep-work to replace the KS2 climbing equipment. This is being installed over Easter, and will be on a rota basis for all children, not just KS2. Something to look forward to!
  • All of the above is because of your generosity and FOSM’s hard work :) And thanks to Mr Calver, our Outdoor Facilitator for all he is doing!

The Planets: Jupiter Holst

Gustav Holst was an English composer, born in 1874 and died in 1934. The Planets suite is his most famous work made up of 7 pieces of music that bring the characters of the planets to life. Jupiter is known as the bringer of jollity.

13th January 2023 Newsletter – Agents of Change and other updates

A note from Mr Applegate

blankIt’s been a lovely start to term- the children have been working so hard. Highlights include:

  • Launching our “Agents of Change” badge and task. We want our children to see themselves as people who make our world a better place. If your child does something that makes our world a better place, please do nominate them via email!
  • We spent a whole day on Thursday looking at Maths in our school. The children are doign so well. Look out for a renewed focus on learning times tables!
  • Seeing progress in our Year R outside area continue.
  • Showing new parents around our school: they were amazed by the “please” and “thank you’s” of the children, and holding the doors open, and also how hard they were working. Keep it up!

This week’s top news & reminders

  • Thursday 19th January is census day. The number of meals we serve impacts our funding next year. Remember, all children in Year R, 1 and 2 receive free lunches every day. Therefore, it would be great to see as many school lunches ordered as possible. Our caterer’s (Pabulum) have put together a special, delicious menu. Save the date! Click here to see the menu
  • Snow plans. It’s not uncommon to have snow in Spring! Our plan for snow is to always assume school will be open unless you hear otherwise. We’ll communicate via email and website if anything changes.
  • School grounds during wet weather. Please avoid walking on any of the banks after school (this applies whatever the weather). Thank you!

    A few parents have asked about drainage on the paths, following the downpours and flooding this week. It’s a real challenge for us as the site wasn’t built in our favour. The pathway is also the runoff area for the fields and playgrounds, and drainage wasn’t installed when it was built. We are getting fresh quotes, but it is a very expensive job. We have to weigh up how we use the little money we have for these large projects, and primarily how we can benefit the children the most. We’ll keep you posted!

  • Vote for St Mark’s in Tesco! We are delighted to have been entered in the Tesco Community Grant Scheme. Customers** will be able to vote for our project to improve our school grounds. The project with the highest number of votes across our region will receive up to £1500, 2nd place up to £1000, 3rd place up to £500.
    • Please look out for the voting box in the following stores between now and the end of March!

Samuel Barber was an American composer who lived from 1910 – 1981. Adagio for Strings was written in 1936 and is Barber’s most well-known compositions.

A note from Mr Applegate

Life can feel very full-on for all sorts of reasons. Whether it is the pace, the pressure, or the worry, it can be hard going. However, Christmas can give us the chance to take a breath and refill our own bucket as well as others. You may find that ‘refilling’ in reading a book, in your faith, in watching a film, or playing a game. Sometimes it’s in having your own time, or by meeting up with good friends. Thankfully, refilling doesn’t need too much money or technology – often neither! Whatever you do, I hope this Christmas season gives you and your family that opportunity to find the real meaning of rest and being refilled.

  • Thanks to Pabulum for putting on a great Christmas lunch yesterday.
  • Huge thanks to FOSM for their efforts this term, and of course your generosity. See a few photos below!

  • School Orchestra – Our school orchestra put on a marvellous performance for KS2 children this week playing festive tunes. Please contact us if your child has been inspired to join? The orchestra would love extra members. Your child just needs to have been having lessons for at least a year.
  • Calling all Parents with Skills! We are hoping to create a register of parent trades and skills which we might be able to call upon for school issues and projects.  You may own a business, you may have a trade, or you may just have a useful skill which could be beneficial to us at St Mark’s. If you can offer any help we’d be most grateful – please complete this form. Thank you!

    Help with energy costs – local Citizens Advice services are supporting eligible households with the costs of gas, water and / or electricity bills. Households who qualify for support can contact their local Citizens Advice directly.
    Help with food costs – there are 19 Community Pantries across Hampshire which provide food at a lower cost than supermarkets, in exchange for a small membership fee.
    Food vouchers – food vouchers will be available to households who receive council tax support, and households who receive housing benefit. These will be distributed by local district and borough councils in the coming months. Those who are eligible don’t need to do anything – they will be contacted by their local council.
    Housing costs – local district and borough councils can provide support for housing costs in exceptional circumstances. Residents are asked to contact their local council if they think they may be eligible for emergency support.
     

    Holiday Activities and Food programme – will be providing more than 120 free schemes this Christmas for children who receive income-based free school meals during term time.
