As it is Sports Week next week (23rd – 25th June), we know it maybe a little confusing about what the children should be wearing on which day. Therefore, we have made a timetable to help you know what your child/children should be wearing on each day. On days which say Sports Clothing, children can wear any sorts of sports attire. On the day which say coloured team t-shirt, children should be wearing a t-shirt which shows which colour team your child is in, and some sort of sports shorts or trousers. Please do not buy new clothes though – a close match is fine. Thank you for your support with this slightly different Sports Day this year. Sponsorship Form – PDF or Word Doc
Car Wash – Saturday 12th June! Times are: KS1 10.00 – 11.30 KS2 11.30 – 1.00 If you have children in both, come any time ! Card payments and cash accepted
Rev May – don’t forget to say goodbye this week.
Sports Week – for children only! See details below.

Message from Mr Applegate
Rev May: Sadly, it is Rev May’s last week with us at St Mark’s. Please do wish her all the best – she’ll be on the gates as usual this week (Monday KS2, Tuesday KS1), as well as on Friday for 15minutes each. We have LOVED having Rev May in our St Mark’s community. Despite starting in July 2019, she has very much become “one of St Mark’s”, and we are so grateful for her time, support, input and fun. We will be having a special worship on Friday to send her off, too! On behalf of our school, we wish her the very best as she takes up her new post in Chichester.
INSET Update: On our INSET day on Monday, we spent time strengthening our curriculum to ensure it best meets the needs of our children. We looked at the projects we teach, and how we can teach all subjects to help children become experts! We also reviewed how we include, represent, and value everyone in our society through what we teach – irrespective of race, ethnicity, religion etc. Everyone is loved and accepted, and we want our children to really hold that within their own values and actions, and to stand up for injustice.
September Classes: Very soon, we’ll be sending you a link to complete an online form regarding friendships for classes for September 2021. It will come via email.
September Plans and Covid: Making decisions about September is tricky – there is no change in government guidance, and possible government delays to ‘Freedom Day’ on June 21st may or may not impact school. Rest assured we will keep doing our best to ensure children’s safety. Please continue to be careful! You may be interested to know that in Basingstoke primaries, there was a total of 11 cases last week alone. We too had a positive case last week, although the child hadn’t been at school since before half-term so there was no risk to our pupils, and they didn’t have any contact with others during half-term. The family did the right thing in getting a PCR test once there were symptoms, and also isolating. Please remember:
If you or your child has a temperature, persistent cough, or loss/change of taste/smell, they must isolate, along with your household, and get a PCR test immediately. Please also inform the school via covid@stmarksce.org.uk. Please err on the side of caution. Please don’t just carry on with normal life if you have symptoms.
A lateral flow (LFD) test is not a replacement for a PCR test. If there are symptoms, a LFD test is no good! It has to be a PCR test. This is a common misconception. LFD tests are used on an ongoing basis when there are no symptoms.
Generosity: On a different note, your generosity knows no bounds! On our Non-uniform day before half-term, you gave £798! And at a recent nearly new sale, you raised £120. This brings our totaliser figure to £18099.92! Amazon Smile has raised over £465 – it’s easy! The money raised is being used to cover COVID costs, and to provide children with additional resources including technology, playtime equipment, stationary, books and more. Thank you so much
Mr Applegate
Year 6 Group Photo
The school photographer will be taking a year group photo of our Year 6 children on Wednesday 16th June. If you do not want your child to be included in this photo, please let the school office know.
Sports Week
This year sports day will look a little bit different. Due to Covid, we are unable to all spend the day outside competing for our colour teams with our family and friends to support us. We still want sports day to go ahead and for children to have the opportunities to earn points for their team.
We will be holding a Sports Week from Wed 23rd June to Fri 25th June (reserved dates Mon 28th to Wed 30th June).
Across this week, each year group will have an afternoon where they compete for their colour teams in an Obstacle Race. Then at another point this week, they will attempt the challenge of beating the teachers at a number of different activities.
During sports week, we would like all children across the school to wear sports clothes. On their designated afternoon for the obstacle race, we would like your child to wear their colour team t-shirt – please see timetable below. Class teachers will have list of who is in which colour team if you are unsure.
Obstacle Race Days – team colour t-shirts needed to be worn on this day.
Year 1 and 2 – Weds 23rd June (Reserve Mon 28th)
Year 3 and 5 – Thurs 24th June (Reserve Tues 29th)
Year R, 4 and 6 – Fri 25th June (Reserve Wed 30th)
For the beat the teacher challenge, we are asking for the children to be sponsored. Thanks for all your support, please do ask your child’s teachers if you have any questions. Miss Thomas and Miss Barnett
Enjoy our work by Year 2 pupils!

Yet another busy half-term has gone by, A huge thank you to you as parents and carers for your support towards our school and your child’s learning. Given their experience of the past year due to lockdowns and the uncertainty of it all, we think they have coped remarkably well. It’s not been easy, but they have shown our learning behaviours throughout.
Thank you to our FOSM team who continue to take charge in raising much needed funds for our school. Can I plant a seed – they are in much need to support to join the committee and for parents and carers to take an active part in planning and organsing events, not just helping. Many of the committee will be finishing soon because their children will be leaving in July (you have to have children in the school to be on the committee). This basically means if we don’t have more committee members, FOSM won’t be able to run. It really is that stark. Please do consider if you can plug this gap. Email us or conact us if you’d like to find out more.
Following on from the poem I shared last week, I include below a brilliant diagram and video below. It shows that when we approach our children with a relationsihp-based focus and not a behaviour-based focus, we begin to build secure attachments with our children. We teach and parent best when we are attuned to their needs – we listen, we notice, we respond with love, kindness and wisdom, not threat, consequence or harsh words. The diagram actually applies irrespective of the chid’s age! I hope it provides a helpful reflection for you as it has done for me. As the short video below states,“The need for attention is actually a need for connection.”
What will September look like? Will we still have class bubbles? Will school return to pre-covid normality? These are questions we just don’t know the answer to. Government guidance has not changed, and the variants around make things uncertain for us all. Please rest assured of our continued intention to look after your children in the best way possible, whatever the restrictions in place.
Finally, we said an emotional farewell to Mrs Gatfield this week. Having worked with us for almost 13 years, it was clear to see the impact she has had on staff and children over that time. Listening to Year 6 children share about their memories of her from when they were in Year 1 was just lovely. An LSA’s impact on a child can never be underestimated. Mrs Gatfield, we wish you all the best – you will be much missed at St Mark’s!
Have a wonderful break – and enjoy the promised good weather! Mr Applegate

I hope you’ve had a good week, despite the weather! The children have coped remarkedly well, and continue to work hard day in, day out. I genuinely am so proud of them, and of course the hard work and effort of every member of staff.
When I was growing up, we had a poem on our wall. The words have always stuck with me. I’ve been thinking about it recently, and have included it here. “Children learn what they live” encourages us (parents/carers/staff/relatives etc) to model and show the attitudes and values that we want our children learn. It’s about the environment they live in. As a parent, I feel like I often get it wrong. “Hurry up, we’re going to be late!” or “Why on earth did you do that?” or “Now we have to clean the mess up!” However, each day is a new day. We pick ourselves up, reflect, and try again to model to our children the best we can be. We want to make their environment one where they learn the values and attitudes which we value. Ie they learn what they live. The poem reflects how we try to operate at St Mark’s. We don’t always get it right, but it’s our aim.
A massive thank you for your generosity in our Bags2School collection. A total of 1516kg was brought in, giving the school £454.80! Thank you.
As mentioned before, we are running a ‘Sports Week’ on 23rd-25th June. Whilst we can’t invite parent along, the children will be taking part in activities in their bubble.
Don’t forget – INSET day on 7th June!
Have a brilliant weekend, Mr Applegate

Thank you to those who joined parents’ evening this week. I must admit to missing seeing and talking with parents in reception as was the normal way! Hopefully seeing the written work from the children, as well as the conversations with teachers, has given you a good idea of how your child is doing and areas to work on.
We’ve been thinking about mental health awareness week this week. Mrs Alsey shared about how forgiveness can help our mental health too. She gave us the picture of a tree – it takes in the bad (CO2) and gives out the good (Oxygen). When we harbour anger and frustration, or we feel wronged by someone, we can take in the stress and frustration of it. But letting it out through forgiving ourselves and others releases that stress and helps us manage our emotions in a good way.
Staff News – I’m sorry to say that Mrs Gatfield will sadly be leaving St Mark’s at the end of May. Mrs Gatfield has worked with us as an LSA since 2008, and will be much missed by children and staff. She shared that.. “My time at St Marks has been extremely rewarding and it’s been a privilege to work with so many amazing teachers and children, however the time has come for me to change career paths … St Marks is an outstanding school and I hope it continues to go from strength to strength.” Mrs Gatfield will be finishing at half-term. We won’t say goodbye just yet, but I know you join me in thanking Mrs Gatfield for her dedication, effort and energy poured into the children and St Mark’s over the years. She has impacted so many lives, and we are grateful for all that she has given. We wish her every success as she returns to the veterinary world.
Finally, if your child is in KS1, can you help us in our finances by having a school dinner on Thursday?! See below.
Have a wonderful weekend! – Mr Applegate
Class Photos
Class photos will be taken on Monday 17th May. We are aware of children who shouldn’t have their photo taken, but if you would like your child not to be in this photo, please do let the class teacher know.
Census Day
Next Thursday (20th May), is our school census day. If possible, please would you encourage your children to have a hot school dinner that day, as this helps with school funding from the Government. School dinners are free for children in Key Stage 1 (Years R, 1 and 2), and cost £2.50 for children in Key Stage 2 (Years 3 – 6). As we cannot accept cash at the moment, school dinners should be paid for online – if you need details of your child’s dinner account please contact the school office.
Next week is week 2 on the school menu – Thursday’s options will be RED – roast chicken, GREEN – vegetarian sausages with roast veg, WHITE – jacket potato with vegetarian sausages. Children with allergies have their own special diet menus.

Use the email covid@stmarksce.org.uk if you have questions or need to report symptoms or a positive case.
Please keep us updated – for example, of test results.
Read this letter from Public Health England about symptoms and testing.
If a child or parent is at home because of symptoms, please keep the siblings off too. IE the whole household needs to isolate, and the person with symptoms needs to get a test.
We are moving online with homework, spellings and Google Classrooms. If you need help with technology, please do let us know by emailing the office.
If a child is off school but able to work, then Google Classroom work is available – and it should be completed. Teachers spend a lot of time making sure this work is available so no-one misses out!
