Good morning everyone,
We hope everyone is well and enjoyed the half-term break. I have been sent an updated flyer from the Basingstoke Foodbank. This is attached.
Have a great day,
Mrs Greer & Mrs Elms – Pastoral Care Team 🙂
We hope the children all enjoyed a fun Half Term break. After such a fabulous start at school they deserved a well earned rest!
They have all come back very happily and we are already getting stuck into our first week of learning focussing on Autumn, Diwali and Bonfire night. Thank you for supporting your child over the Half Term by taking them to collect Autumnal objects; they so enjoyed showing their collections to friends in their class. We were so lucky with the weather on Monday as we went on our Autumn walk and it was the perfect start to the term!
Please click here to read this term’s Newsletter which briefly outlines our topic for the remainder of the term – ‘Terrific Tales!’
As always, you can find more information about what we have been learning each day on Tapestry in our ‘Walk and Talk’ post.
The Year R Team
Today in our celebration worship, we said goodbye to Mrs Sim, Mr Blake and Miss Barbour. We wish them all the best in the future, and are so thankful for their time at St Mark’s.
Year 5 had an amazing trip to Winchester Science Centre on Thursday, and Year 3 enjoyed seeing Stonhenge up close and personal last week. All of our children were so well behaved and received such positive comments on their behaviour. Thank you to our staff and parent helpers who made it all possible!
We’re pleased to be reintroducing our pupil voice groups after half-term, including student council, eco warriors, Christian Voice ambassadors, JRSOs and more. We’ll keep you posted!
A massive thank you to FOSM who agreed to fund £6000 worth of school resources, including books, cleaning materials, stationery, tables, and maths resources. We are grateful to the FOSM and our parental community for your ongoing support and generosity.
Simba continues to be a help in school, and he really is settling into his role of school dog. It’s been lovely to see children who may have been worried about dogs grow in confidence. What else does Simba bring to St Mark’s? A sense of fun, a way to unwind, a helpful distraction from the worries of the day, a reward for RPs, and at times a bit of chaos :)
Finally, don’t forget to return the FOSM Christmas cards order by Weds 4th November.
Have a great half-term, Mr Applegate :)
When we have Parents’ Evenings, we normally ask you to complete a survey. This helps us know how we’re doing and what we can improve on.
You may wish to wait until after your appointment, but the link is here should you wish to complete it earlier.

If your child is in after 8:50am, they are marked late in the register ⏰
Our local British Legion office has supplied St Mark’s with some poppies and a limited number of other ‘goodies’ for the children to receive in return for a donation. This will be done over the next couple days within the individual classes, to preserve our current Covid bubbles.
Below is the poster showing what will be available, and the suggested donation, but we are expecting not to have enough of everything for every child, so it will be dealt with on a ‘first come first served’ basis to keep it fair.
If you would like your child to be able to get a poppy and/or any of the other items, please send the donation in an envelope marked with your child’s name.
Well done to:

As part of our children’s education, we’re keen for children to hear a wider variety of music. This week’s choice is below! Relax and enjoy!
Our children need your help! They would massively benefit from an hour, an afternoon, or whatever you can give to help them during school hours. Our St Mark’s Heroes scheme aims to gather as much support as possible to help our children with their learning. It could involve reading with a child, supporting a small group, or generally helping in class. It could be helping out at lunchtimes. It’s also great experience if you’re looking to get more involved in schools. We’ll provide the training! There would be a simple application form to complete, a chat with Mr Applegate, and a free DBS check to complete. Click here to register your interest, and to find out more. Thank you for thinking about this – and for thinking of the difference you could make!
Ever wondered if a movie is suitable to watch? This website gives parent and child reviews of movies, tv programmes, books and apps. You’ll want to decide yourself, and your views may differ, but it can be a great place to start.
We’re a host school for the Aspire Alliance. Find out more, including information sessions, here.
Did you know that there is an SCO App for your phone, so instead of usign the website to make school payments, you can use the app? It’s an easier way to manage school payments.
We’re opening up again, so why not hire our hall, field or facilities for a birthday party, fitness class or training event? Click here to find out more.
Just a reminder that we remain a cashless school.
Please pay for Breakfast Club, school dinners, trips and any other items via your ScoPay account.
Just a reminder – thank you :)
The School Nursing Team will be here on Wednesday 17th November to administer the Flu Vaccine for all children Year R-Year 6.
The link to complete the consent form has now been sent home. Please complete as soon as possible, even if you do not give consent, as you can specify this on the form. Thank you
The ‘Friends of St Mark’s’ (FOSM) was formed early in the life of the school. All parents are automatically members and our committee organises social events for children and adults and fund-raising events such as Key Stage discos, Easter Egg Hunts and Summer Fun days.
Over the last few years the ‘Friends’ have donated money that has contributed towards extra resources to benefit the children at St. Mark’s which has included playground equipment, books for the school library, and general school funds. We are now a registered charity, too. Charity number: 1188879

We have had a great first term together. They have settled in well to life in Year 1 and have enjoyed all our creative learning this term. The children have loved exploring paint and learning about the primary and secondary colours. They have learnt how to create hues of colours and painted some beautiful turnips linked to our story, ‘The Enormous Turnip’. The children also loved retelling their own versions of the story using their own vegetable and characters. Maybe your child will be able to retell their story to you if you ask them. We also had fun this week printing using different vegetables. We recreated a farmer using the prints.
In maths this term, we have been exploring our knowledge of numbers to 10. The children have been finding one more and one less than numbers and they have been learning to make numbers in different ways. We have also been learning to recall all our pairs of numbers to make 10. There is a great game online if your child wants to continue to practice their bonds to ten.

Our next project is ‘Polar Explorers’. To start our project, we would like to invite your child to dress up for the day as an explorer. This will be on Thursday 4th November. Further details will be emailed out to you. Any questions please email the team on year1@stmarksce.org.uk
Have a super half term. Thanks for all your help with your child’s learning this term.
