Year 1 – Tuesday 28th April
Good Morning Year 1
Dear parents and children,
We hope you are well and have been enjoying going outside in the sunny weather patches. We’re so impressed with all the fantastic activities you have shown us so far – keep up the great work!
We have been sending emails to you, so make sure you check your junk/spam inbox just in case.
If you’re looking for something extra to do today, check out this video about plants and how to grow them: BBC Bitesize Plants
Thank you for everything you are doing.
Year 1 Team
Topic
Science: How to plant a seed.
All plants start as a seed or bulb. They need certain things to grow so it is important think carefully when planting a seed. If you’ve not watched it already, watch this BBC Bitesize video about what plants need. Have a go at planting your own seeds. You can use some seeds from a packet or take some seeds out of fruit or vegetables you have in your house.
To help you plant your seeds, check out Miss Jamieson’s video on how to plant a seed here: How to Grow a Seed – Miss J
When you’ve watched her video, have a go at planting yourself. Make sure a grown-up is around to help you.
English
You might want to have completed the topic job before having a go at English today. Alternatively, you can check out Miss Jamieson’s video on how to plant a seed if you’ve not watched it already. Find it here: How to Grow a Seed – Miss J
Think about all the different steps you did to plant your seed or use Miss Jamieson’s video to see the steps she took.
What things did you need? See if you can write a list of things you used to plant the seed. ‘You will need:’
What happened first?
What order did each step happen?
Today we are going to write some instructions for how to plant a seed.
What are instructions? Can you tell someone at home what they are? Look at our instruction example below. What do you notice about the instructions? Use the word mat, template and slides provided to have a go at writing your own instructions.
Maths
Today we are looking at using repeated addition with arrays. If you would like to review our guide to Year 1 multiplication, you can find it here: Year 1 Multiplication Guide
Use these slides and talk through this concept with someone at home: Arrays and Repeated Addition
If you’d like to continue learning about arrays and repeated addition, have a go at this activity: Arrays and Repeated Addition Activity
There are some extension challenges here for those who would like them: Arrays and Repeated Addition Challenges
Helpful Reminders
We are still checking our emails regularly and have loved seeing what you are doing. Feel free to email us if you have a question or just want to say hello at: year1@stmarksce.org.uk
You can access our general resources to support your child at home here: Y1 General Resources
BBC Bitesize are providing daily lessons for children on their website. There is no expectation to do these but we may refer to some of their activities in our home learning. You may also find that they have something your child is interested in and would like to learn about. Find the link here: BBC Bitesize Daily Lessons
Please do not feel like you have to complete all of the activities provided in one day. We have given a variety so that there are options for you to choose what works best for you at home. The ‘Daily Time Fillers’ section includes some additional activities you could have a go at if you get time but we would not expect you to do more than one of these activities a day.
Read Write Inc are kindly doing live daily phonics sessions. They are at certain times depending on which sounds you would like to practise. We suggest either Set 2 or Set 3 sounds. Find the link here: RWI Phonics
You can still find books to read that are assigned by your class teacher on the scholastic website. Please email us if you have any questions about this.
Daily Time Fillers
As well as the learning tasks we upload each day, there are a few ‘extras’ that you could have a go at, if you get time.
- Read a book. This can be their school reading book, an e-book or a book from home.
- Alternatively, you make like to read an ebook from Oxford Owl or Collins Big Cat.
- Have stories read to them.
- Read or spell some key words.
- Read Write Inc speed sound videos (linked in helpful reminders)
- Practise naming the letters of the alphabet and sing the alphabet song (capital and lower case).
- Use phonicsplay or phonicsbloom. Phonicsplay has a new website! You’ll need to login with the username: march20 and password: home during this time. We have updated the link here: PhonicsPlay /Phonics Bloom link
- Practise counting from 0-100 (forwards and backwards) or in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s
- One more and one less than a number (pick from 0-50)
- Numbots (login is in the back of the reading log)
- Sing a number bonds song or use Hit the Button (number bonds to 10 or 20): Hit the Button link

Year R – Tuesday 28th April
Good Morning Puffins, Parrots and Penguins!
Hello children, are you feeling fantastic today? Thank you for sending us all the lovely photos of your crown designs yesterday, they were amazing and fit for any king or queen!
Don’t forget to try a little bit of reading everyday. Use the Oxford Owl and Big Cat sites to find some fabulous reading books to try.
Today, we are going to learn a little more about castles using a book which Mrs Hearn is going to read to you. You’ll be an expert on castles by the end of the week!
Have a lovely day,
Year R Team
NOTE TO PARENTS & CARERS:
Just to clarify after the Newsletter yesterday, as you are using Tapestry to regularly update us on your children’s home learning there is no need to use the Year R email address to send any work or updates. The email address (yearr@stmarksce.org.uk) can, of course, still be used for sending in your queries or requests for help etc.
This week we go up, up and away to explore… Castles
English – Castle questions
Listen to Mrs Hearn reading today’s book, ‘In the Castle’.
Now look at the pages below and work with your grown up to answer the questions.
- Why is the boy using a wooden horse and a wooden sword to practise with?
- Can you remember some of the things a knight does?
- What do you think a “heroic quest” is?
Next, look closely at these castle non-fiction pages and ask your grown up to read the labels and captions. Now answer these questions.
- What is a moat for?
- What is the difference between a portcullis and a drawbridge?
- Tell your grown up three things that a knight might do to attack a castle.
Maths – Numberblock 13
Yesterday you helped Numberblock 13 become ‘unstuck’. Today we are going to be investigating different ways to make number 13 using a part-part whole model.
First find 13 objects from around your house, pop them into a 20 frame to check that you have the correct amount.
Now investigate how many different ways can you make number 13 by placing your 13 objects into a part-part whole.
You could download a part part whole model here or you could make your own using plates at home.
Remember to use phrases like “13 is the whole, 9 is the part and 4 is the part” to really impress your grown up!
If you would like an extra challenge, try writing a number sentence to match your part-part whole 9 + 4 = 13.
Let’s help Numberblock 13 be a little less unlucky!
Design a coat of arms
Today we are going to design a coat of arms. We saw a knight with a coat of arms on his shield in Mrs Hearn’s book today.
Have a look at the information page below about coats of arms and look at the different colours, designs and symbols often used.
Now can you have a go at designing your own?
Here are some different shaped templates for you to choose from from, or you can ask your grown up to draw one of the shapes on a piece of paper for you click here.

Today, Mrs Hearn is reading a book called “In the Castle”.

Helpful Reminders
Don’t forget you can email us on yearr@stmarksce.org.uk. We would love to hear from you if you have a question, need a password or need some help.
You can continue to use Tapestry to share your child’s work. Please only upload one post a day. You can either choose one activity or put all the activities you complete on one post.
We look forward to hearing from you. We may not reply the same day!
Independence
The children in Year R are very rarely asked to work independently, particularly when writing. It is expected that they will need adult support to get started on all of the tasks we set for them here, and continue to need it throughout their activity.
However, we want to continue to build their independence, so encourage them to use resources which can help them be independent like sound cards, letter formation cards for handwriting etc.
Note for parents: Hopefully your children will enjoy working through these activities with you. We completely understand it may be difficult to complete all these tasks due to other family commitments or you are working from home, so please do not worry; complete what you can with your child.
There is absolutely no expectation that you get all, if any of these activities completed each day.

Message from Mr Applegate
Summary:
1. Home Learning – Feedback Required
2. Home Learning – Please email in once a week
3. Good luck, Miss Campbell!
4. Emails…
5. New Year R Parents
1. If you have any comments about home learning, please do let us know using this form. We are interested in your thoughts and suggestions. We are focusing on trying to get the amount of home learning right (ie not too much!), and also understanding that all families have different circumstances. We will also be adding a ‘weekly overview’ to our Monday posts, so you have a good idea of what the work will be about for the upcoming week.
2. We know that your children are working hard, and producing lovely work! Please could you email in a photo or a electronic document at least once a week, to the year group email address, so that the teachers can see how they are getting on? It’s up to you what is emailed in, but the teachers would like to see it, and praise their efforts. Note that Year R pupils can do this through Tapestry as normal. Thank you!
3. Miss Campbell, one of our fantastic pastoral team members, has officially started her maternity leave. She is doing well, and we all send her our very best wishes in the months to come! I’ve no doubt that she will pop in to say hello when things are back to normal. If you would like to send her a message, simply email the office.
4. Please do check your emails and spam/junk folders regularly. If you think you aren’t receiving anything simply email the school. Remember we aren’t sending out daily emails with links to children’s home learning. Simply go to the school home page and click on the year groups. If you don’t receive the school newsletter and year group emails via email, you can Sign up here!
5. We are pleased to say we are full in Year R from September. Please do let any parents you know who are starting Year R with us about this page, and the registration form they need to complete.
Thank you for your ongoing support! Have a great week. Best wishes, Mr Applegate

Extra Maths!
We have 2 great resources to share this week.
Want a daily Maths Challenge? Head over here, where Miss Goddard will get your mind thinking! Answers included!
PowerMaths from WhiteRose is an activity and teaching book for use during the summer term. It’s just been released at a cost of £5.99, and is available for Years 1-6. Whilst we won’t be referring to it in our home learning, it does match what we teach in school and is a helpful resource for that little bit of extra maths!

From Elise in Year R:
- Knock knock, who’s there? Donut, donut who? Donut ask.. it’s a secret!
