Year R newsletter – ‘Terrific Tales!’

 

We hope that you all enjoyed a fun, yet restful Half Term. We are looking forward to having the children back and hearing about their adventures, including their Autumn Walks.

We enjoyed the opportunity to meet with you before Half Term to share and celebrate your child’s successes since starting school. Please can we remind you to add a comment to the Tapestry post we sent out before your parents evening meeting, titled ‘My first half term at school’. It’s lovely to hear your views on your child’s achievements so far.

The children have all done amazingly well and we hope they are recharged after the holiday ready to begin our next topic ‘Terrific Tales.’

Year 3 – Stone Age – Iron Age

Year 3 had a fabulous first term, learning about Stone Age to Iron Age. The children immersed themselves into their learning and loved our school trip to Stonehenge too. We were not the only school at Stonehenge but had so many comments about how well behaved and engaged the children were by the Stonehenge staff and general public, even a comment had made it back to our bus driver about how super we were. Well done Year 3 for making us proud! In Science this half term, we have carried out many investigations to learn about how rocks are formed, the 3 types of rocks, the hardness and permeability of rocks. We also recreated and made our own fossils understanding the fossilisation process. In History, the children have loved finding out about the Stone Age through to the Iron Age. We have taken the time to understand the meaning of pre-history and how archaeologists have discovered what it was like in the past. We looked at many artefacts and began to understand how evidence about the past is found by archaeologists. They also enjoyed making bog butter when learning about the Bronze Age. # We are looking forward to seeing the children tomorrow and introducing our new project ……. Watch this space!

An amazing first term in Year 1

We’ve had a great time in Year 1 learning all about our ‘sensational senses’. The children have learnt about their 5 senses and the different body parts linked to them. In English, we have written senses poetry, exploring what we can see, hear and smell. We have also written our own versions of the story ‘The Enormous Turnip’. The term ended in our fabulous art gallery, where the children exhibited all their artwork. Thank you to everyone who came along – the children loved sharing all their learning with you.

Next term, our new project is ‘Polar Explorers’. As part of this, we would like to invite your child to dress up for the day as an explorer. Our dress up day will be Tuesday 1st November. Please do not feel that you need to buy anything new for this day, as winter clothing will be good enough so dig out your woollies! Your child could wear clothing such as; tracksuit bottoms or jeans, a jumper or fleece and possibly bring a hat and scarf.

Year 1 Team

Year 5 – Autumn 1 Learning Update

What an incredible half term the Year 5 children have had! We are so very proud of how well the children have settled into their new classes and also how motivated they have been about their learning – Space has proven to be a very popular subject this year! Below is a little snippet of just some of the amazing work that the children have completed over the last seven weeks. 

English 

The children have written fantastic stories based on the video ‘One Small Step’ and some really informative non-chronological reports based on the animals found upon the fictional planet of Pandora!

 

Art

The children have shown so much creativity in Art as they have experimented with so many different painting skills – painting on different surfaces, using different paint types, exploring with their paint mixing and also layering up different painting techniques. Look at how amazing their final pieces turned out!

 

Design and Technology

We know that our D&T day was a favourite for many of our Year 5 students. They showed so much creativity in creating pop-up books for younger children. They used a range of mechanisms including pivots and sliders to make the books really interactive. The day was a huge success!

 

Super Science – Learning through experiments, reading and a school trip!

The children have shown the most amazing thirst for knowledge through their Science learning this half term and have loved learning about Space. They have completed some awesome experiments in class, read about inspirational (and less well known) scientists and had an awesome trip to the Winchester Science Centre too. On the school trip, the children took part in a Space themed workshop, explored the Space exhibition, explored the whole floor of other science experiments and also watched a show all about our solar system in the planetarium. What a way to finish the half term! 

We hope the children have enjoyed their learning as much as we have enjoyed teaching them. We also wish you a restful half term and look forward to welcoming the children back into school for our next topic – Globetrotting around North America!
