Raging Rivers in Year 4

Year 4 have had a great half term so far learning all about rivers. We kick-started our topic making rivers in a tray. The children were set the challenge of making a river out of foil which could hold water and show meanders. We had to use natural resources to make it as realistic as possible.

We then spent some time thinking about the features of a river and using clues to work out the different parts. Ask us to tell you what makes up a river. The children have become geographers and used map work skills to locate waterfalls around the world as well as learning about coordinates. 
In science, the children have been busy learning about 'States of Matter' and conducting experiments with solids, liquids and gases. The favourite one so far was all about melting where the children had to time which solids would melt the quickest – melted chocolate smelt very yummy! Next week, we are learning about condensation and the water cycle!
We are so proud of all the children for working so hard in every subject. They take pride in all their work and are just amazing. Over the next few weeks, we are going to be very busy learning carols for the Christmas Carol concerts. It is hard to believe that the Autumn term is nearly over!

  • We have now sent out our new-look Spring term After School Club form. Deadline closes on Tuesday 22nd November at midday. Children already attending choir (KS2 or Year 2) will continue with these clubs.
  • Year R and Year 6 have been assigned buddies and have had their first meetings! They were amazing!
  • Pastoral Drop-In Session

    The St Mark’s pastoral team will be hosting a parent and carer drop-in session every half term, each with a different focus.

    Our second session will be looking at supporting children to manage anger and strong emotions.

    Mrs Atherton, Mrs Delves and Mrs Elms will be on hand to chat through any concerns, with a cup of tea and a biscuit 🙂.

    Please join us on Monday 21st October from 8.30am to 9.30am in the church (younger children welcome too!).

The Great Fire of London

We are really enjoying our history project this half term.  We have looked carefully at the architecture in London at the time of the fire and have made our own houses.

Year 1 become Polar Explorers!

Year 1 have had a great start to the new term. We loved becoming Polar Explorer’s and finding out all about the animals we might find in the North and South Poles. The children created some amazing artwork as part of their explorer day as well.

Over the last week, we have started learning about the world and finding out about the different continents and oceans of the World. Maybe ask your child to see if they can name any of them. In English, the children have loved writing their own versions of the story, ‘The Great Explorer’ and in maths we have been learning about adding and taking away numbers within 10 using counters and numbers lines to help us and then recording the number sentences to match.

Remembrance Sunday – Year 6 represent St Mark’s

Thank you to Ano and Emily from Year 6 who represented the St Mark’s school community at the Basingstoke Remembrance Service this morning. It was a privilage to be with Emily and Ano, in remembering those who have given and continue to give so much in service to our country.
