Autumn 2 Learning Update – Globetrotting Around North America

Written by Ellie, Ella and Josh in 5SP

Maths

This half term in Maths, we did lots of fractions! We added them, subtracted them, compared them and found a equivalent fractions. We learned about mixed number fractions and improper fractions. We multiplied and subtracted them to find the equivalent and to make it easier to solve the questions.

D&T

In D&T, we have used hacksaws, hot glue guns, pens and pencils to make… WOODEN TRUSS BRIDGES!! The bridges are 15cmx 5cmx 5cm. We used 18 5cm pieces and 6 6.2cm pieces of wood at 90 and 45 degree angles. When they were finished, they were amazing!!! Here are some photographs of some bridges that we made:

Art

For this term, in Art, we made some naive art, and since our topic was all about North America, we created a class map of the USA! We each drew one thing from there in naive style and stuck it onto a giant outline of the country. When they were done, they were incredible! After this, we each made our own islands on A3 paper, with different names, such as: Island 2.0, Bartland, Area Cullen, and Fairydream Island. We had so much fun, and they looked outstanding!!! Here are some examples:

English

In English this term we wrote a travel brochure for Mexico, wrote a story all about a man and dog achieving their life long dreams and wrote the last two stanzas from the poem called the Highwayman. Here are some pieces of published work:

Geography

In Geography, we learnt all about North America and the biomes in it. We made maps with the different biomes and coloured them in differently. We also learned about all the different features of the land – human and physical, as well as understanding the weather. We wish we could visit North America – it sounds like the most amazing place!

Book Club

In Book Club this term, we learnt about The Highwayman By Alfred Noyes (poetry), The Light of Hope (a story about slavery and how slaves escaped), Ordnance Survey Maps ( a non-fiction text all about how maps are created), and All About Mountains (facts and pieces of information you need to know all about mountains). We practised lots of different reading skills.

French

This term in French we have learnt how to say all the numbers up to 31, we have learnt how to say all the days of the week in French and months of the year. This has helped us write sentences, which say when our birthdays are!

Science

We’ve been having an amazing time doing Science. We have done many experiments, using boiling water and ice, and have been investigating the properties of different objects and materials.

PE

In PE this term we have been doing Badminton. We have practised the different grips on the handle. It has been super fun learning a new sport and we have become so much better at shots, serves and grips. The wind did make it a bit tricky to hit the shuttlecock sometimes though!

Music

In Music this term, we have been very busy playing the glockenspiel and the drums. It was a lot of fun, and we managed to learn a lot about them. We learned different tunes and beats on the drums.
