Keep Calm and Carry On!
Dear Parents and Carers,
What a wonderful time we have been having in Year 6! The children have been exceptional and have shown such enthusiasm when finding out so many historical facts during our history topic, ‘Keep Calm and Carry On’.
This week, we have started making our Woolton pies. Having learnt all about rationing, the children were tasked with producing a vegetable pie, just like those made in WWII. With only one rationed item allowed on their ingredients list, the children chose a selection of vegetables to fill their pies with. From broccoli to sweetcorn, swedes to potatoes, the choices were endless! In the kitchen, the children have shown such politeness and inquisitiveness and they have been absolute pleasures. The pies were a great success, enjoyed by many. Miss Pettitt thoroughly enjoyed taste testing 6P’s dishes, too! All children will have participated in the preparation, cooking and tasting process by the end of next week.
We were also incredibly lucky to have a visit this week from Mr Stiles who enjoyed sharing his knowledge about his wartime experience including what is was like to be evacuated from Southampton as a young boy in 1939. The children were delightful and listened with such interest. After the talk, the children were able to ask Mr Stiles some questions and see some special memorabilia that he had brought in such as a baby’s gas mask, books and newspaper articles. It was such an interesting and informative talk – we are all so very grateful to Mr Stiles for giving up his time for us. As well as sharing his story so passionately with the children he is a keen fundraiser for a special charity close to his heart. We would like to make a contribution on behalf of Year 6 to help the Motor Neurone Disease Association. This charity is focused on improving access to care, research and campaigning for people affected by motor neurone disease. Please send in your donations, however big or small, to class with your child by Friday, 2nd December and we will forward all contributions as well as letters of thanks from the children to Mr Stiles.
We cannot wait for our ‘Evacuation day’ on Tuesday 6th December where all children will need to come to school that day dressed as a wartime evacuee. Further information can be found on the website post and has been emailed to parents.
