Year 5 – Learning Update 1
What an incredible start to the Autumn Term – Connections in Space! The children have truly immersed themselves in all aspects of our learning so far and have completed some excellent pieces of work.
Just in case you weren’t able to attend the Year 5 Information Evening last week, we just wanted to remind you about our upcoming school trip on Thursday 21st October. Please ensure permission slips are completed if you have not done so already. On the day of the trip, we will be departing school at 9am so would like all Year 5 children in school at 8.30am please. We will be back by the end of the school day. Children must wear their school uniform and bring a packed lunch and drink with them, plus a coat too. The children are allowed to wear trainers for the trip if they wish.
Maths
Starting with place value, the children began by learning about numbers up to one million. The children had lots of different experiences looking at the value of different digits in these numbers, they practised rounding to the nearest 10, 100, 1000 and 10,000 and also explored negative numbers and Roman Numerals. It was a jam packed three weeks! The children have now moved onto securing their knowledge of addition and subtraction methods. Here are a couple of examples of brilliant learning.
English
‘One Small Step’ was our first unit in English. It was a video about a young girl, who dreamed of being an astronaut, and faced many challenges and setbacks before finally achieving her dream. The work that the children produced was emotive, descriptive and really technical too – we are really proud of how the children are securing their knowledge of the different writing lenses. Below, you can see an example of a sentence stacking lesson where we wrote a section of the story together as a class – this is called a plot point. You can also see an example of a finished story which has been written, edited and published by a child in the year group. Isn’t it amazing?
Next, we are moving on to writing non-chronological reports about animals found on the mythical moon of Pandora. The children have already spent time learning about this enchanting place and have started writing a non-chronological report about a Hammerhead Titanothere in their sentence stacking lessons to practise using lots of technical and scientific language. Here is an example of a mind-mapping piece of work alongside a sentence stacking lesson focussed on one waypoint. We can’t wait to see the children’s final independent pieces of work!
Art
What a creative half term it has been so far! The children have been completing some beautiful artwork in their sketchbooks and you can see some examples below. From experimenting with different hues of grey using paint, to using different charcoal pencil techniques to sketch images of the moon, to learning about and replicating the work of Peter Thorpe – their work has been so imaginative! The children also had the opportunity to replicate some of Peter Thorpe’s artwork outside using chalks – brilliant fun!
