Things to remember
Always count the total number of objects or parts to work out the denominator (the bottom number in the fraction.)
When the numerator (top number) and denominator (bottom number) are the same number it is equal to a whole part = 1, = 1 etc.

We hope you are all well this Tuesday morning, and that you have had a restful sleep, a good breakfast and are ready to start the day. We have seen some fantastic learning already this week- well done! We certainly have some amazing crocodile experts in our year group and you have told us some incredible ‘Wow’ facts. Thank you. We’d love you to continue to share some of your home learning today too. Well done to Leo and Myla for the work below.
Can you get anyone to join in with you today if you’re taking part in the fitness session with Joe Wickes? Remember that it is on at 9am on Youtube. Keep working hard on your 2,5, and 10 times tables and maybe try to improve your score on TT Rockstars. We hope you’re enjoying Spelling Shed too!
Keep washing your hands and take frequent breaks throughout the day.
Don’t forget you can email us on year2@stmarksce.org.uk. We would love to hear from you if you have a question, need a password, need some help, want to show us your work or even just say hello! Please get your grown up’s permission before you email us. We look forward to hearing from you. We may not reply the same day!

Ongoing Daily Activities
Here are the daily activities for you to complete each day. Continue with your handwriting booklet that you could work through very gradually, not in one go. You can either print the booklet, or do this onto paper of your own at home. We look forward to seeing how amazing your handwriting will be when we see your work. The Common Exception Words should also be learnt gradually, by selecting 2 or 3 words a week that you should aim to learn along side your weekly spellings.
20 minutes of reading either a school book or a home book. If you are running short of books please see the links on our Educating Home page on the website. There are lots of useful links to free e-readers from Collins, Oxford Owl and more…
Complete your 2,5 and 1o times tables using TTRockstars, or a different method.
Complete your weekly spellings using Spelling Shed or the link below, and continue with the Year 2 common exception words.
Yesterday, you completed your research to find out all about crocodiles. Today, you will be using all of your expert knowledge to create your own crocodile fact card. You can present this information in anyway that you would like. Remember to make it eye catching and try to group your facts into sections. You may like to include some pictures, ‘Did you know facts?’ or ‘Wow’ facts too. Try to vary your sentences to engage the reader and where appropriate include exciting adjectives or interesting details that you have learnt. If you want to be even more creative you could use the computer to present your information and make a powerpoint to share with your families or send to your relatives via email.
Look at the example fact cards and the facts that you found out about crocodiles yesterday. Decide which sections you will have,
Remember to include headings to organise your writing. These can also be questions for the reader. Try to group your facts together and remember to use capital letters and full stops in your writing. See if you can add an exclamation sentence: How amazing crocodiles are! or a command sentence: Stay away from their sharp teeth because they might bite you.
We’d love you to be creative and design your own format but if you’re stuck, you can use the template below:
Today in maths, we will continue to use the White Rose Maths resources to continue our work on fractions. The aim of today’s task is to find a third of different objects and amounts. You can watch the video using the link attached below. You will need lesson 2- Step 7- Finding a third. After you have completed this, you can use the attached sheet to check your understanding. If you can’t print this, you can write the number of each question onto your paper and then write the answers. Once you have completed this, you can use the answer sheet below to check your answers. We hope you enjoy your fraction work. Maybe you can try using fractions when you are playing with your toys later or sharing your food or snacks?
Today, in art, we will continue to develop our drawing skills by extending patterns that we see in nature. You can choose which animal pattern you like best and then try and extend it by matching shapes and colours. You can use whatever resources that you have at home: pens, colouring pencils, paints and crayons would all be good. Pay close attention to the patterns to copy the detail and have lots of fun!
We hope you are well and have been getting lots of fresh air – even if it is just in your garden! We have an exciting story for you today. Miss Jamieson would like to read The Gruffalo to you! You can find this in the video resources section at the bottom of this post. The password is the same as previous clips.
If you’re looking for something extra to do, you can listen to some nursery rhymes. You could see how many you know or even learn a new one! Find them here: Nursery Rhymes
Thank you again for everything you are doing.

Helpful Reminders
We are still checking our emails regularly and have loved seeing what you are doing. Feel free to email us if you have a question or just want to say hello at: year1@stmarksce.org.uk
You can access our general resources to support your child at home here:Y1 General Resources
Please do not feel like you have to complete all of the activities provided in one day. We have given a variety so that there are options for you to choose what works best for you at home.
Read Write Inc are kindly doing live daily phonics sessions. They are at certain times depending on which sounds you would like to practise. We suggest either Set 2 or Set 3 sounds. Find the link here: RWI Phonics
You can still access Joe Wicks’ daily PE videos at 9 am each morning: Joe Wicks Daily PE
If you are running out of reading material, you can try Oxford Owl.You need to make a free parent account but it gives to access to some Oxford Reading Tree e-books that we use at school. Make sure you are reading a book that is at your child’s band. If they are finding this band too easy, you could try a songbird book from the band above.
Alternatively, you can find free Big Cat ebooks by following the steps linked here: Big Cat ebooks.
Ongoing Daily Activities
Read for at least 20 minutes a day. This can be their school reading book or a book from home.
Have stories read to them.
Read or spell some key words.
Practise naming the letters of the alphabet and sing the alphabet song (capital and lower case).
Threading/Play dough/Cutting/Colouring/Painting
Read Write Inc speed sound videos (linked in helpful reminders)
Practise writing sentences about a story they know. When writing, please remind them to use full stops, capital letters, neat handwriting and finger spaces.

Writing them down
Painting them
Put them into a sentence
English – Phonics
As our English activity today, we are focusing on phonics. We will be looking at three alternate sounds today (more than one way of writing the same sound).
You could watch the Read Write Inc video on Set 2 and 3 sounds live at 10:00 and 10:30 here: RWI Youtube as this would a great start to this activity. Afterwards, the clip is available for 24 hours on the RWI youtube channel.
After practising some speed sounds, have a look at these sounds:
What do you notice about them? What is the same? What is different?
They all make the same sound! They use different letters though.
Sound out and blend these green words. Can you be a great detective and work out which word has which ow/oa/o-e sound?
Here are some activities you could complete if you would like to continue learning about ow, oa and o-e:
Monster Words – Sound out and blend the words. Draw a monster next to the words that are not real words (monster words!). Can you tell someone at home which ow/oa/o-e sound is in the word? Click here: Monster Words ow oa o-e
Snakes and Ladders – Roll a dice and move that amount of spaces. Sound out and blend the word before moving to the next person’s turn. If your square has a ladders, you can climb it but if it has a snake, you have to slide down. The winner is the first person to reach the finish square. See if you can tell someone at home which ow/oa/o-e sound the words have. Find the game here: Snakes and Ladders ow oa o-e
Write each sound on different pieces of paper and see if you can make a word that has an ay/ai/a-e sound in it. You could choose a word from the table above, or think of your own. For example:
Maths
Message from St. Mark’s maths team: ‘White Rose Maths’ are a community of lead Maths practitioners who develop Maths education by providing medium term planning and resources to schools. Within our everyday lessons at school, St Mark’s use White Rose as a basis for our Maths lessons and children are used to learning in this style. Over the last few days, White Rose have released some high quality materials for Home Learning which include a teaching video and resources for each lesson. Each day, we will give you a summary of the Maths learning and signpost you to the video we would like your child to watch which will be followed by an activity to complete. The answers will also be available if needed.
Lesson 1 – Introduce weight and mass
This is an introduction to weight. Have a look at the video together. Can you say the sentences together? ‘The ___ is heavier than the ___.’ ‘The ___ is lighter than the ___.’
Before having a go at the activity, can you become a human scale? Find two objects from your house, put one in each hand and stretch your arms out. Can you feel which is heavier? Can you feel which is lighter? Show what you think by lowering the hand with the heavy object and lifting the hand with the lighter object.
We have prepared some extra challenges for those who would like them. You can find them here: Lesson 1 Challenges
Topic
RE: Today we are thinking about what it means to be sad or happy and the different colours that are associated to these feelings.
Use the slides to think about the difference between sad and happy. You will need to talk this through with someone at home. Click here: Sad and Happy
Think about a time that you were happy and a time that you were sad. Have a go at drawing these situations and colouring the border with either a sad or happy colour. You can look at Miss Jamieson’s example on the slides above if you wish. Find the activity here: RE Enquire
Did you see any snow falling outside your window yesterday? That was very exciting wasn’t it – There were some really big flakes falling but sadly not enough to build a snowman!
Hope you all had a lovely day yesterday and are looking forward to today’s activities! :)
Today we are going to be listening to the ‘Noah’s Ark’ story with Mrs Hearn, counting in 2’s just like Noah had to when the animals got in his boat and completing some lovely rainbow art! Lots of fun things to look forward to.
We can’t wait to see your lovely work on Tapestry later.
Don’t forget you can email us on yearr@stmarksce.org.uk. We would love to hear from you if you have a question, need a password or need some help.
You can continue to use Tapestry to share your child’s work. Please only upload one post a day. You can either choose one activity or put all the activities you complete on one post.
We look forward to hearing from you. We may not reply the same day!
Independence
The children in Year R are very rarely asked to work independently, particularly when writing. It is expected that they will need adult support to get started on all of the tasks we set for them here, and continue to need it throughout their activity.
However, we want to continue to build their independence, so encourage them to use resources which can help them be independent like sound cards, letter formation cards for handwriting etc.
Note for parents: Hopefully your children will enjoy working through these activities with you. We completely understand it may be difficult to complete all these tasks due to other family commitments or you are working from home, so please do not worry; complete what you can with your child.
There is absolutely no expectation that you get all, if any of these activities completed each day.
Ongoing Daily Activities

English –
Today’s story is ‘Noah’s Ark’ read by Mrs Hearn. To view this please enter your password in the video resources section at the bottom of this page.
At the end of the story, Noah saw a brightly coloured rainbow in the sky -colours make our world a brighter and happier place. Rainbows are often seen when sun shines through the rain, sometimes after a storm. The rainbow that appeared in the sky, was God’s promise that he would never flood the Earth again.
Can you think of a time when you saw a rainbow?
Can you name and write down the colours of the rainbow?
What colours make you feel happy?
Can you write a promise that you would like to keep? Maybe you’ll promise to keep your bedroom tidy.
There is some rainbow themed paper here but you can use whatever you like.
Why don’t you investigate grouping the animals in 3s, 4s, 5s etc?
Creative Activity – Rainbows to symbolise hope
Can you create a picture of a rainbow? You can use any art materials you like: paint, felt tips, pencil crayons, chalks, wax crayons, collage materials, wool….
As rainbows are a symbol of hope, when you’re finished, why don’t you put your rainbow up in a window at the front of your house so other children can see it if they go out for a walk.
Please can parents also take a photo of the finished rainbow before they go in a window and include these in your daily tapestry post. We would love to put all your rainbows together to make a rainbow mural. Collaborative artwork even when we are not together :)
Here are some additional rainbow themed programmes, song and activities:
