Year 1 – Thursday 23rd April

Good Morning Year 1

Dear parents and children,

We hope you are keeping safe and well. We have really enjoyed seeing all the fantastic learning you have emailed in so far – keep them coming! Today is Zoom day. We would love to see you join us on a video call! Here is a reminder of the times each class can join a zoom video meeting with their teacher and classmates:

Helpful Reminders

BBC Bitesize are providing daily lessons for children on their website. There is no expectation to do these but we may refer to some of their activities in our home learning. You may also find that they have something your child is interested in and would like to learn about. Find the link here: BBC Bitesize Daily Lessons

Please do not feel like you have to complete all of the activities provided in one day. We have given a variety so that there are options for you to choose what works best for you at home. The ‘Daily Time Fillers’ section includes some additional activities you could have a go at if you get time but we would not expect you to do more than one of these activities a day.

Read Write Inc are kindly doing live daily phonics sessions. They are at certain times depending on which sounds you would like to practise. We suggest either Set 2 or Set 3 sounds. Find the link here: RWI Phonics

You can still find books to read that are assigned by your class teacher on the scholastic website. Please email us if you have any questions about this.

English

Today we are creating a character profile for the girl in the Footpath Flowers story. If you need a recap of the story, click here.

Adjectives are words that describe a noun. Can you think of any adjectives to describe the little girl in the story? What does she look like? What is she like as a person?

Look at the adjective words below. Which ones would you use? Which ones wouldn’t you use? Why?

Maths

Today in maths we are moving on to a new topic: multiplication. In Year 1, this is mainly looking at groups or ‘lots of’ and we avoid looking at the multiplication symbol as this is a more abstract concept. We focus on teaching multiplication through concrete objects and picture representations. We do not introduce times tables in Year 1, although we do encourage children to count in 2’s, 5’s or 10’s. When working out multiplication questions, we mainly teach the children to use arrays or repeated addition. Use our multiplication guide for examples of these. Week 2, lesson 3 – Make Equal Groups

Today we are starting something brand new in maths! (Yay!) We are going to be having a go at making equal groups. Have a watch of the video. What do you spot? While watching the video and doing your activity can you join in with the sentence?

‘There are ___ equal groups of ___.’

Question 5 on your job asks you to make groups out of objects. You could use any objects you like to do this. You could use teddies, pasta, toy cars, sweets, loom bands or anything else you can think of!

Science: Flower Hunt

Today we are going to see if we can identify some flowers. Have a look at the pictures on these slides: Flower Slides

Do you know what any of these flowers are called? What do you notice about them? How is each flower the same/different to the other flowers? In your garden or on your walk, see if you can spot any of the flowers on our identification sheet. Find it here: Plant Identification Sheet

Daily Time Fillers

As well as the learning tasks we upload each day, there are a few ‘extras’ that you could have a go at, if you get time.

Read a book. This can be their school reading book, an e-book or a book from home.
Alternatively, you make like to read an ebook from Oxford Owl or Collins Big Cat.
Have stories read to them.
Read or spell some key words.
Read Write Inc speed sound videos (linked in helpful reminders)
Practise naming the letters of the alphabet and sing the alphabet song (capital and lower case).

Practise counting from 0-100 (forwards and backwards) or in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s
