Year 2- Tuesday 21st April

Good Morning Year 2

Ahoy Year 2,

How are you today? We hope you had a relaxing evening and a good sleep so that you are ready for today’s pirate adventure. Remember to build breaks into your day and to wash your hands regularly. If you can get out in the fresh air for a while as the weather is meant to be nice today. You could even set up your own pirate adventure in the garden and use the secret pirate code to make some of your own clues! Be creative and have fun!

As you are probably aware, the BBC have produced some activities to support online learning at home. We will continue to produce our own and will dip into these and the new government resources where appropriate. Feel free to use these too if you find them helpful. BBC Home learning

Yesterday, links were also sent out for our class Zoom meetings later in the week. If you haven’t received yours then please check spam email boxes and let us know if you can’t find it. We are really looking forward to seeing you all.

Pirate Clues!  Ahoy Me Hearties!

blank              blank The first piece of the map. It looks like it is real because it has a scull and crossbone. Maybe you could design your own pirate flag using this piece of the map.

Our pirate crew were quick off the mark with the clues yesterday- Well done to Ellie, Josh, William and Elouise who were the first to email in their answers. Remember- not to email before 8.30am though as it’s important for pirates to get their rest and we don’t want you waking your Mums and Dads up too early! We were all busy hunting through our cupboards yesterday afternoon- a good excuse for a clear out too- but eventually Mrs Rosso found the first piece of the map in one of her kitchen cupboards. See the map piece above! It looks like we’re going to have to continue to work as a team to find all the rest of the clues. See the link below to find the next clue. Remember it is hidden as a video clue so that other pesky pirates don’t get their hands on it. There are no videos under the link and no story today but we will have a story tomorrow.

We would love to hear from you and see your lovely work, so please do not hesitate to email us at year2@stmarksce.org.uk. Enjoy your day!

Helpful Reminders

Don’t forget you can email us on year2@stmarksce.org.uk. We would love to hear from you if you have a question, need a password, need some help, want to show us your work or even just say hello! Please get your grown up’s permission before you email us. We look forward to hearing from you. We may not reply the same day!

Presentation – Please remember to do your very best work. Handwriting and presentation are as important at home as they are in school. You can complete your work in a book or if you need lined or squared paper you can get it here.

Note for parents: Hopefully your children will enjoy working through these activities and can do independently. We completely understand it may be difficult to complete all these tasks due to other family commitments or you are working from home, so please do not worry; complete what you can with your child.

Additional Ongoing Daily Activities

Here are some additional activities for you to have a go at each day if you choose to. Please feel free to do as much or as little of these as you wish. We have added a handwriting booklet that you could work through very gradually, not in one go. You can either print the booklet, or do this onto paper of your own at home. We look forward to seeing how amazing your handwriting will be when we see your work. The Common Exception Words should also be learnt gradually, by selecting 2 or 3 words a week that you should aim to learn along side your weekly spellings.

  • 20 minutes of reading either a school book or a home book.
  • Practice your 2,5 and 10 times tables using TTRockstars, or a different method.
  • Practice your weekly spellings which will be provided below, and the Year 2 Common Exception Words.

English

In English today, we will be writing a recipe for a pirate by considering all of the things that a pirate has or needs. To so this we will be using expanded noun phrases. These sound more complicated than they actually are. A noun phrase has a determiner (in year 2 we use a, an, the) and a noun (person, place or thing) i.e. a parrot, an octopus, the ship. An expanded noun phrase is the same but it contains an adjective or adjectives to add more description and tell us about the noun: a colourful parrot, an enormous octopus, the old, pirate ship.

You may like to practise writing noun phrases and expanded noun phrases first and then have a go at writing these in command sentences starting with an imperative(bossy) verb to write your recipe. We look forward to seeing your recipes. Make sure you include all of the ingredients to make your pirate really nasty and disgusting!

There are some useful video clips on the BBC Home learning website to further explain expanded noun phrases. These are geared at higher year groups so contain different determiners (or articles) but are shown in short video clips that may be useful. In year 2, we keep it simple by using a, an and the as determiners.

Maths

Today in maths, we will be finishing our unit on fractions. We will be counting in fractions today which can be a tricky concept for children. Using some concrete resources may be helpful in helping your children to understand.

As with the other maths lessons shared, there is a video to help explore this concept, as well as an activity sheet to complete. You can then check your answers using the answer sheet provided. Please click on the first link below to access the White Rose page, before completing ‘Lesson 2’ in ‘Summer Term – Week 1’. Please email us if you have any questions regarding this. We know some people experienced problems with the videos yesterday. We are hoping this won’t be a problem today. We think it was just due to the demand of many people using the website at the same time. Afternoons can be quieter so this is another time to try if you do experience difficulties.

If your child loves maths and would like to complete a further math challenge then you can find a daily math challenge on our website: https://www.stmarksprimary.net/maths/

Good luck!

Topic

Today’s extra activity is to make your own treasure map. Pirates need maps to help them find treasure. Can you use the co-ordinates on a map to solve the puzzle and answer the questions?

Can you create your own treasure map for pirates to use? I wonder what treasure you will find?
