Year R – Monday 20th April
Good Morning Parrots, Puffins and Penguins!
Hello everyone! We hope that you all had a fantastic Easter and enjoyed eating your Easter eggs! We’ve had a some glorious weather over the holiday and we hope you’ve been out enjoying it as much as possible; going on walks with your family or just playing in the garden.
Summer Topic – What an adventure!
Our topic across the whole of the Summer Term is “What an Adventure!” and we will be travelling to different environments in the world; the jungle, Africa, under the sea and even space! We will be finding out about the environment, the people and animals that live there and reading stories set in these places. We will also be thinking about different ways of travelling to these different destinations.
This week we are going to kick off our topic by setting off on our journey in a hot air balloon, imagining where we might go on adventure, who we might meet and what they will do there!
Just to let you know, we have moved some of the resources from the Ongoing Activities section. There were so many and the list was getting a bit long and overwhelming! These can all still be found in the Educating Home page and there is a link to that page in the Ongoing Activities section.
For today’s story time, Mrs Hearn has recorded the story of Mog the Forgetful Cat by Judith Kerr. This isn’t meant to link to today’s learning but we didn’t think you’d mind! It’s down in the Video Resources section. Enjoy!
From the Year R Teachers
This week we go up, up and away to explore… going on an adventure!
Helpful Reminders
Don’t forget you can email us on yearr@stmarksce.org.uk. We would love to hear from you if you have a question, need a password or need some help.
You can continue to use Tapestry to share your child’s work. Please only upload one post a day. You can either choose one activity or put all the activities you complete on one post.
We look forward to hearing from you. We may not reply the same day!
Independence
The children in Year R are very rarely asked to work independently, particularly when writing. It is expected that they will need adult support to get started on all of the tasks we set for them here, and continue to need it throughout their activity.
However, we want to continue to build their independence, so encourage them to use resources which can help them be independent like sound cards, letter formation cards for handwriting etc.
Note for parents: Hopefully your children will enjoy working through these activities with you. We completely understand it may be difficult to complete all these tasks due to other family commitments or you are working from home, so please do not worry; complete what you can with your child.
There is absolutely no expectation that you get all, if any of these activities completed each day.

Up, Up and Away!
This week we are going to begin a very exciting adventure! We are going on a journey. Have you ever seen the film Up? In it, a man goes off on an adventure and he travels in his house! He attaches hundreds of floating balloons to his house until it drifts up and away! It’s a bit like a hot air balloon.

I wonder what the Earth would look like from the sky. Use Google Earth or Google Maps to first find your house and then zoom out as if you were flying up and away from your home! Click below to try Google Earth.
What can you see? Stick to Basingstoke and your local area for now. Look carefully and see if you can find some of these landmarks and places:
- your garden
- a park that you have played in
- a pathway or road that you travel to school on
- our school
- a supermarket you have been to
- Basingstoke golf club – what are all the circle shapes?
- the motorway
- some water – Black Dam ponds/boating lake at Eastrop Park
- a church
- a block of flats
- a farm
- an office block in the town centre
- Basingstoke town centre and Festival Place
Maths –
Today we are going to meet our new Numberblock! Do you know which number it is? That’s right – Numberblock 11.
Watch our new episode here: Click to view. *NEW LINK WHICH WORKS *
Can you make a set of eleven objects?
Now can you put them into a 20 frame? You can use a template like this – click to download or use the online frame and select the 20 Frame (pictured below).
What can you see? “10 and 1 more makes 11”
Can you make 11 using other resources or toys, each time practising the same phrase? “10 and 1 more makes…”
How many different ways can you arrange 11?
What interesting shapes can you make? Here are a few we tried.
Hot Air Balloons
Ask your grown up to read this reading book to you. Can you read the red words for them? Can you spot some labels? Work together to answer the “Questions to talk about” which are listed at the end.
Click on the image below to open the link in the Oxford Owl website. Remember, to access the Oxford Owl E-Books you will need to have set up a parents account, but this is free to do. Click here to create an account before you begin reading today’s book.
How could you make a hot air balloon? It could be a drawing, a junk model, or even a working hot air balloon or parachute. (It’s probably wise to use a hairdryer to heat the air rather than a flame!)
Here are some ideas we found online but you might have some different and more creative ideas!
