Year 1 – Monday 20th April

Good Morning Year 1

Dear parents and children,

Welcome back! We hope you had a lovely Easter break. Our new project for Summer 1 is ‘Flower Power’ and we will be learning all about flowers and what some of them are called. We will be finding out the different parts of a plant and hunting for different plants in our gardens and on our walks.

Please check your emails today for information about a class zoom meeting this week. Remember to check your spam/junk folder just in case.

We have a fantastic treat for you today. Miss Jamieson would like to read the story ‘Aliens Love Underpants’ to you. You can find it in the video resources section at the bottom of this post. In case you missed them, you can watch any stories read by us again at the bottom of this post. The password is the same as previously.

Thank you for your continued support as we move into the summer term.

Helpful Reminders

We are still checking our emails regularly and have loved seeing what you are doing. Feel free to email us if you have a question or just want to say hello at: year1@stmarksce.org.uk

You can access our general resources to support your child at home here: Y1 General Resources

Please do not feel like you have to complete all of the activities provided in one day. We have given a variety so that there are options for you to choose what works best for you at home. The ‘Daily Time Fillers’ section includes some additional activities you could have a go at if you get time but we would not expect you to do more than one of these activities a day.

Read Write Inc are kindly doing live daily phonics sessions. They are at certain times depending on which sounds you would like to practise. We suggest either Set 2 or Set 3 sounds. Find the link here: RWI Phonics

Remember, you can still find books to read that are assigned by your class teacher on the scholastic website. Please email us if you have any questions about this.

English

Today we are focusing on our spelling words for the week. The words we are looking at this week are:

going

come

  • Use these slides for ideas on how to practise spelling these words at home: Spelling Slides
  • Here are the activities outlined in the spelling slides if you would like to complete them: Spelling Jobs

Maths

Today we are going to have a go at measuring capacity! This is a practical lesson, which means that you get to have a go and explore! You will need to collect some containers from your house. You could use: water bottles, cups, mugs, bowls, spoons, lunch tubs, buckets, jars, saucepans, containers or anything else you can think of. You could do this outside with the hose or in the kitchen/bathroom sink.

Before you start, which container do you think has the greatest capacity? You could have a go at saying the sentences: ‘The ___ has the greatest capacity.’ ‘The ___ has the smallest capacity.’

With your grown-up’s help, have a go at measuring the capacity of different containers. How many mugs does it take to fill a saucepan? How many cups does it take to fill a jug?

Fill the smaller container with water and pour it into the bigger container. Each time you fill the smaller container with water, make sure that it is filled to the top (this makes it fair). What can you spot? Have an explore. You could use the stem sentences to explain what you know. ‘___ cups fills the ___.’ ‘The capacity is ___ cups.’

When you’re finished, you may wish to have a go at these questions: Maths – Monday 20th April

If you would like even more of a challenge, we have prepared some extra challenges for you here: Mon 20th April – Extra Challenges
