Year 4 – Monday 30th March

Good Morning Year 4!

We hope that you have had a lovely weekend.  The result of our TTRockstar battle with Year 3 was another victory for Year 4.  Well done for achieving 15,473 correct answers!

This week, our English and Topic work will focus on mythical creatures as that proved to be the most popular theme in last week’s poll.  We are looking forward to seeing all your creative ideas as the week unfolds.

Your English and Topic work link closely together today, so have a read of both tasks and then start with the Topic work first.

Presentation – Please remember to do your very best work. Handwriting and presentation are as important at home as they are in school. You can complete your work in a book or if you need lined or squared paper you can get it here.

Note for parents: Hopefully your children will enjoy working through these activities and can do independently. We completely understand it may be difficult to complete all these tasks due to other family commitments or you are working from home, so please do not worry; complete what you can with your child.

Maths – Lesson 1 – tenths and hundredths

This week we are going to try out the White Rose working from home resources.  We use the White Rose planning resources at school so children will be familiar with some of the teaching style steps.  You will find a video to go with each session and an activity.  If you are unable to print it out, do your best to write your answers on paper.

In this lesson, the children will explore fractions which are represented as tenths and hundredths. A 100-square will help them to understand this concept with emphasis on the relationship between 10/100 having the same value as 1/10 which they will be able to see visually.

Please watch Week 1 Lesson 1 – Here is the video link: https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-4/

Parents/carers: There is an answer sheet attached below to use once your child has completed the task.

Topic – Creating a Mythical Creature

As part of your Topic work, we would like you to create your own mythical creature. In today’s Youtube video below, Miss Goddard explains this task in detail and also tells you that later in the week, you are going to be asked to re-write the well-known story ‘The Gruffalo’ but using your mythical creature instead of the Gruffalo! You can create your mythical creature by drawing it using pens and pencils or you could model it using something like plasticine; if you would prefer to use technology, then you could use Paint or a drawing app or even get really creative and model it out of Lego if you wish – the choice is all yours!

English – Describing your Mythical Creature

Once you have created your mythical creature, then your English task is it describe its features using powerful adjectives and also thinking about different senses such as what it looks like, what is sounds like, what it feels like and also what it smells like. If you have drawn your mythical creature, then you could label each feature with a description or alternatively, you could write a descriptive list down on a separate piece of paper. Below is a word bank to help you think of some ideas when designing and describing your own creation!

Another important task is to name your mythical creature and because we are going to be using this instead of the Gruffalo, it would be helpful if it ended with the same sound so your story can rhyme. Miss Goddard has named her’s ‘The Giant Prickalo’ as it’s based on a hedgehog which has lots of prickles. Here are a few other names which would work: Monstero, Rabbito or Squirrelo. Choose a name which fits the features of your creature or make a new word up!
