English – Diary Entry

Yesterday, we read in the ‘Boy who Swam with Piranhas’ the unexpected news that Uncle Ernie had canned Stan’s precious goldfish.

We considered the different reactions to this, outlined below.

Stan Auntie Annie Uncle Ernie
  • Heartbroken that Uncle Ernie has cooked up and canned his goldfish
  • He is angry with Ernie
  • He has been able to communicate with the 13th goldfish
  • Appalled that anyone could do such a thing
  • He has walked away from his home, taking the goldfish with him
  • Despairing of Ernie
  • Can’t believe what he has done
  • Concerned for Stan – she feels for him
  • Annie is torn between the two people she loves most dearly in the world
  • Can’t believe Stan has walked away
  • She is disappointed with Ernie
  • Proud of himself for his new product
  • Oblivious to the fact that Stan is angry
  • Thinks everyone should share his success and achievement
  • Is convinced he has done this for the family

Choose Uncle Ernie, Auntie Annie or Stan to write a detailed diary entry about their response to Ernie canning Stan’s goldfish.

Include the following:

  • Emotive language – show the strength of the character’s feeling
  • Write in the first person. Really imagine that you are that character – maybe rehearse their response out loud to get into character
  • Write mainly in the past tense, but include the present tense for how they are feeling now

Topic

Today is St Patrick’s Day.  Can you find out any information about St Patrick?  Which country is he the patron saint of?

Here is some information to start you off: https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zqtf34j/articles/zcxbsrd

You might like to present this information using PowerPoint or create a poster about St Patrick.

We hope that you have a lovely day – remember to read to someone today too!
